Operating the Somerset Catchment Market (for delivering nutrient reduction) in practice involves stakeholder engagement with Developers and Landholders, and strong team collaboration to deliver trading mechanisms for ecosystem services and responding to Government Legislation updates in real-time.

Support with implementing the Bristol Avon Catchment Market for delivering biodiversity gain. This involves stakeholder engagement (running webinars with buyers, suppliers, regulators and LPAs), drafting key documents such as the Catchment Opportunities Statement and Market Settlement Report, and using the Biodiversity Metric 4.0 to do biodiversity unit profiling for Nature-based Projects.

My research aimed to improve the success and yield of quinoa crops grown in new environments such as Europe, contributing towards meeting food security goals. To achieve this, I secured funding from the British Society for Plant Pathology to research (within Oxford University’s Department of Plant Sciences) biotic threats to quinoa crop cultivation, and collaborated internationally with quinoa researchers and farmers across the Americas and Europe.

Our project aimed to support afforestation of the harsh, mountainous regions in the Dubrovnik-Nevera region in Croatia. My role as the ecological engineer was to design innovative “seed pods” that could be dispersed by drones (designed by the robotics team) on the mountains to promote the germination and growth of oak and cypress trees, to combat the increasing number of local wildfires. To achieve this, I conducted ecological surveys in local nature reserves alongside lab-based experiments, and encouraged interdisciplinary collaboration with the robotics team to design the prototype“seed pods”.Throughout this role I taught local highly-gifted and special-needs students in applied biology, through organising and running ecological workshops on Saturdays. This ensured that the work we started would continue after the internship finished. Teaching also gave me the skills to act as assistant lecturer for the 2019 Science Underground Academy, running outreach workshops such as Star Gazing that featured in local newspapers. Show less
