Although not an official company, this robotics team is arguably one of the most important additions to my career. By joining FIRST robotics team 5006, I discovered a new way to use my dedicated nature to make an impact on my community. When I joined, I found that, despite having highly intelligent members, their lack of organization or streamlined marketing prevented them from reaching their potential, and I was eager to get to work. However, due to my unapologetically feminine style, I struggled to gain respect in the male-dominated extracurricular. Instead of fighting my natural talent for design in an effort to fit in, I used my unique perspective to create a more professional and cohesive brand, complete with a new website, team attire, and even award-winning videos which caught the attention of thousands worldwide. This above-and-beyond design not only won us several Imagery awards but also improved our publicity by making us more memorable and giving a great first impression. In addition to working on our public relations, I used the management skills I gained while running my business to create a more functional team, which ended up becoming the 2018 World Championship Finalist, beating over 3,000 teams. I don’t mean to take full credit for this accomplishment, despite the hundreds of hours I worked to make it possible. Instead, I am happy to say it was a team effort, and I am proud of how the team has flourished under my leadership, both as the Head of Public Relations and as their Team Captain. When I joined, I was one of only two girls. Today, women make up 58% of our members.
