About Ellen R. Siegel

"Be prepared" is my motto and "Leave a place better than you found it" is my slogan. I internalized these at age seven, my first year as a Brownie Girl Scout. I loved the ideas. They shape my life, and the way I approached clients' financial issues when I was a financial advisor.Now I am a climate migrant who left Miami after 44 years, relocating to Gainesville, FL, returning to school, to recreate a college degree in climate science and ecology. Why? To protect and save humans and this planet I call home,. I want my next generations to enjoy clean air, clean water, moderate weather, and social stability. I want to be deeply knowledgeable about the science of global warming, and prepared to teach how we can mitigate, and also adapt to climate change and stop the runaway train we are riding. To quote the 1947 Girl Scout handbook, “A Girl Scout is ready to help out wherever she is needed. Willingness to serve is not enough; you must know how to do the job well, even in an emergency."Being prepared lets me help where help is needed. And in retirement I can think of no more important work than focusing on reversing climate change, and as Katharine Hayhoe says "Saving Us". The IPCC report gives us 7 years to fix it. The time for action is now. The world is warming, experts agree, humans caused it, we can fix it, others care too!I have teamed up with The CLEO Institute staff as their Gainesville representative. In my role as Climate Speaker Specialist I have found the sweet spot where joy in what I do, the skills I have, and what needs doing in the world have come together. It feels wonderful to be part of an energetic, fiercely hopeful, and awesomely effective in changing the climate conversation.
