I worked as an Associate Research Officer at UNRCPD on a project that pilots work on gun-free zones in Asia-Pacific. In addition to the project tasks, I worked on other disarmament and arms control issues, most notably the ATT and UN PoA. As part of my duties, I conducted desk research and analysis; developed - together with a team - an online learning course to be included in the UN Disarmament Education Dashboard; organized and participated in meetings; coordinated GFZ project activities with target countries and supported other areas of UNRCPD's work whenever required.

Before taking on my current role, I was an independent consultant working on disarmament and arms control issues, most notably the Arms Trade Treaty (ATT), the UN Programme of Action on SALW and nuclear non-proliferation, especially as they relate to non-governmental entities, such as defence industry. I am also Associate Fellow at Chatham House, where I support work on both conventional and WMD-related export controls.My work, which still continues through a different channel, includes the wider policy implications of the ATT; assessing the implementation of the goals set in the 1999 Hague Peace Appeal; and developing activities to support the involvement of the defence industry and investors in early stages of the ATT.In the non-conventional sphere, my work is expanding to include nuclear-related policy analysis and a wide range of expert consultant services in non-proliferation and cyber-security issues. I have also written a series of independent articles and opinion pieces on a range of topics.

At UNIDIR, I was the Project Manager of the joint EU-UNIDIR projects “Supporting the Arms Trade Treaty Negotiations through Regional Discussions and Expertise Sharing” (July 2010-August 2012) and “Promoting Discussion on an Arms Trade Treaty” (Feb 2009-June 2010). Within the projects that valued close to €3M, I planned, designed and implemented 13 regional seminars and accompanying activities covering over 150 countries, and coordinated research that supported the project implementation. I managed the ATT project team (Assistant Project Officer, temporary staff and consultants), whilst ensuring that other UNIDIR staff and the EU remained fully informed of progress. This involved regular liaison with the UN Geneva/New York, project implementation partners and other key stakeholders (European External Action Service, European Commission, EU Member States, relevant UN agencies, diplomats, civil society, defence industry, etc.) and the media. I was also responsible for the day-to-day financial and budgetary issues of the projects and the extensive, detailed narrative and financial reporting to the European Commission. In preparation of the project activities, I carried out preparatory research, was an active participant in the seminars (chaired, made presentations, coordinated and delivered summaries of discussions and coordinated the seminar press coverage), prepared summaries of the seminar proceedings and coordinated the distribution to stakeholders. I also authored the projects’ final reports and several research papers and was responsible for ensuring that the project outcomes fed into the United Nations ATT (and SALW PoA, where relevant) process by participating in and making presentations at a range of seminars and conferences.

At the primary point of contact for the politico-military decision-making body of the OSCE, the Forum for Security Co-operation (FSC), my formal tasks entailed monitoring the implementation of OSCE politico-military documents, including the OSCE Documents on SALW and Stockpiles of Conventional Ammunition, Anti-Personnel Mines, Conventional Arms Transfers, the then Vienna Document ’99 and the OSCE Code of Conduct on Politico-Military Aspects of Security. I developed, organized and administered awareness-raising and assistance projects and other related activities (including fundraising, networking, training, media outreach etc.); undertook tasks delegated by the FSC (analytical overviews, summary reports, quarterly Confidence and Security Building Mechanisms - CSBM Surveys etc.); represented the OSCE externally by taking part in, and making presentations at, security-related events; and developed ideas and new initiatives related to the implementation of OSCE politico-military documents in support of the FSC's work. As a secondee of the Finnish Ministry of Foreign Affairs, I also supported the 2008 Finnish OSCE and FSC Chairmanships and the FSC Chairmanship Troika in planning and preparing its activities from networking to preparing relevant documentation such as speeches, press releases and reports. Through more informal dialogue and cooperation with OSCE delegations I was also credited with inspiration and development of a number of policies and initiatives such as new normative undertakings of regional SALW brokering and end-use controls and national SALW reporting.

As a researcher in a project "European Action on Small Arms and Light Weapons and Explosive Remnants of War", I conducted research on European policies, practices and assistance programmes on SALW and explosive remnants of war. I completed both individual research tasks and joint assignments with colleagues working for the European Action project. As part of the project team, I organized several meetings, including two major conferences. This allowed me to develop and maintain contacts with a large network of governmental and non-governmental experts. For the field research phase of the project, I was the lead contact person between UNIDIR and its North African partner states. As a research at UNIDIR, I also undertook other smaller research projects. I worked in cooperation with UNDP, UNDDA (now UNODA), and Small Arms Survey in a project to build states' capacity to report on their implementation of the UN Programme of Action on SALW. As part of this project, I conducted training for government officials, made regular presentations at inter-governmental meetings, participated in fundraising activities and wrote two comprehensive studies on national reporting.As part of my general duties, I also participated in conferences and workshops, presenting my research findings and reports.

At Small Arms Survey, a research project of the Graduate Institute of International and Development Studies, I undertook individual project and research tasks and worked as part of research teams, interacting with a wide variety of stakeholders from government officials to NGO representatives and academics. I also participated in international meetings and conferences, and produced several written background studies and research papers.
