As an Engineering Manager at DICE, I was responsible for the career development of a team of multi-disciplinary engineers. I was also responsible and accountable for the teams delivery to our goals and commitments.Some of my notable achievements in this role include:* Managed a team of 8 individuals specializing in core promoter and venue tooling across various disciplines.* Introduced tracking of cycle time metrics to enable the team to improve their delivery process. This resulted in a 10% increase in delivery speed over 6 months.* Led organization-wide initiatives to establish clearer ownership boundaries and more resilient system contracts, incorporating Event Driven Design principles and component mapping.* Implemented career entry pathways to support employees from other departments transitioning into entry-level engineering roles.* Designed and executed a new ticket allocation strategy over a one-year period, enabling promoters and venues to implement complex models and generating new client contracts worth several $100M.

In late 2021 I stepped into the role of my previous manger who had moved on to another team. I took the opportunity to jump into people and team management and thoroughly enjoyed it.Some of the wins I'm most proud of include:* Helping 3 team members advance along their career track, 2 of which gained title promotions moving them along in their career tracks.* Overseeing the migration of my teams technology stack away from VM's and onto Kubernetes. This bought our teams monthly bill down by over 50% due to better resource scaling options.* Resolving technical boundary issues between teams to enable them to have greater ownership over their respective roadmaps and implementations.* Working with our talent acquisition team to move the organisation away from individual team recruitment to a pipeline based recruitment. This allowed us to significantly increase recruitment pace and create a more standard bar for engineers entering the organisation.

My role at Just Eat was on the Service Automation team, we owned the help centre across all platforms and worked to automate customers most common actions after placing an order. The team has delivered numerous projects to take pressure off our call centres which has resulted in millions of £ of cost savings across the business since the programme started.The systems I've had a major hand in are:* Automating self-service cancellations, allowing customers to cancel orders from their phone/browser.* Creating a system to request updates from restaurants on late orders.* Extending the late order update system to allow customers to request compensation from the restaurant.* Implementing a comprehensive compensation system for one of our internal customer care tools.* Creating systems to respond to the spike in customer contact during COVID-19 lockdowns across the globe.In addition to technical work, I was also heavily involved in our recruitment and mentoring programmes. In particular I focused on providing mentorship to junior engineers who had joined Just Eat as their first job. This eventually gave way to The Fresh Engineer Podcast, a podcast program discussing the trials and tribulations of junior engineers in the tech industry.Outside of general engineering I've also had the opportunity to speak at several large tech events on behalf of Just Eat, including the GitHub Enterprise Roadshow.

At Ripjar I had the opportunity to work alongside many talented engineers, designers, project managers, and directors. I worked to deliver two critical projects with the team to the organisations core product offerings. I had the opportunity to exercise my nodejs expertise and apply it to build components for their complex data processing product suites. The projects were scoped directly from customer requests and were delivered within tight timeframes to aid customers in their efforts to corrale big data sources.The core technologies involved in my projects were Nodejs, Elastic Search, MongoDB, Apache Kafka, Apache Web Server, Amazon EC2, and CentOS.

At Gradient I was responsible for designing and shipping the entire API and database behind Gurn while also doing work across the Angular 5+ UI / web extension.As one of 2 engineers at the startup, this role was integral to the ability to build our product and sell it to clients. Some of the core systems I built were:* The billing platform, integrating to Stripe to offer our customers flexible subscriptions.* The core API, to enable search and intellisense driven by the server side platform.* The database structure, which supported the entire platform and the metrics we pulled from it to give to customers.

During my time at Sparkol I've worked on both mobile/desktop and web applications. Towards the beginning of my time here, my main focus has been as part of the Applications team. Our team was responsible for creating and maintaining the mobile and desktop applications that we delivered to users. This includes our flagship product VideoScribe.VideoScribe is a very interesting project as it's a legacy codebase written in ActionScript 3. When first starting on the project there were many areas of the code that needed refactoring and in some cases totally redesigning. I was fortunate to have a solid leading role in terms of the architecture that we put in place to help restore the system and enable it to be more sustainable and extendible.More recently I've been working with the new product team developing both web and mobile applications in a range of different technology. A prime example of this is the Community Exchange service. This is a web app which enables illustrators to upload their creations and sell them to our audience through our applications such as VideoScribe. This whole project was designed to empower illustrators to reach their audience and it's been a real success so far.Currently our team is working in Xamarin to create a new multi-platform mobile and desktop app. This also includes a hefty node and Couchbase Lite backend system.
