About Elliot Mackrell, Ph.D.
I am a chemical engineering Ph.D. interested in the intersection of scientific discovery and high-dimensional datasets. I enjoy mathematics, biology, statistics, coding, and learning from data. During my doctoral studies, I computationally and experimentally explored protein homeostasis and regulatory networks by combining proteomic analysis, text mining, and machine learning. I also worked in the biopharmaceutical industry conducting bioinformatic analysis of clinical RNA-seq samples and PubMed text mining data for therapeutic target identification in autoimmune disease treatments. Discovered global regulatory roles of protein degradation by combining chemoproteomic analysis, linear modeling, text mining, and machine learning to identify 186 novel protease substrate candidates in Escherichia coli.Developed a predictive machine learning model for in vivo protein stability in E. coli, achieving 87.5% accuracy in the experimental validation of 8 substrates.Engineered and deployed an open-source interactive application for filtering, normalization, differential expression analysis, and pathway enrichment analysis of mass spectrometry–based proteomics data.Identified DNA repair factors recruited to colibactin-induced DNA interstrand cross-links in Xenopus egg extracts via differential expression analysis and time-series clustering of chromatin mass spectrometry data.
