About Elliot Mackrell, Ph.D.
I am a chemical engineering Ph.D. interested in the intersection of scientific discovery and high-dimensional datasets. I enjoy mathematics, biology, statistics, coding, and learning from data. During my doctoral studies, I computationally and experimentally explored protein homeostasis and regulatory networks by combining proteomic analysis, text mining, and machine learning. I also worked in the biopharmaceutical industry conducting bioinformatic analysis of clinical RNA-seq samples and PubMed text mining data for therapeutic target identification in autoimmune disease treatments. Together, these experiences sparked my passion for analyzing complex datasets to accelerate biological discovery and innovation. Please feel free to take a look at my personal website: https://ejmackrell.github.io/
Listed skills include Mouse Handling, Tissue Culture, Ir, Uv/Vis, and 4 others.

Postdoctoral Scholar
Ph.D. Candidate, Chemical Engineering
Discovered global regulatory roles of protein degradation by combining chemoproteomic analysis, linear modeling, text mining, and machine learning to identify 186 novel protease substrate candidates in Escherichia coli.Developed a predictive machine learning model for in vivo protein stability in E. coli, achieving 87.5% accuracy in the experimental validation of 8 substrates.Engineered and deployed an open-source interactive application for filtering, normalization, differential expression analysis, and pathway enrichment analysis of mass spectrometry–based proteomics data.Identified DNA repair factors recruited to colibactin-induced DNA interstrand cross-links in Xenopus egg extracts via differential expression analysis and time-series clustering of chromatin mass spectrometry data.
Bioinformatics Co-Op
Developed Shiny application for visualizing cell type—specific transcript abundance, identifying differentially expressed genes, and conducting gene set enrichment analysis in clinical samples across autoimmune disease states.Established pipeline and Shiny application for the real-time analysis of text mining data from PubMed to identify genes, pathways, and diseases of therapeutic interest through information-theoretic and statistical approaches.
Nsf Reu Fellow
Piloted the application of rose bengal photocrosslinking as a preventative measure for graft contracture via cyclic uniaxial tensile testing in an ex vivo tissue model. Characterized photoproducts in irradiated aqueous solutions of rose bengal and varying amino acid and oxygen content.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
Developed an amphiphilic and pH-responsive copolymer for site-specific drug delivery in plants by functionalizing polysuccinimide with hydrophilic molecules. Evaluated PSI nanoparticle size dependence on functionalization and organic phase dilution via dynamic light scattering.
Nsf Reu Fellow
Evaluated the anti-tumor immune response generated by magnetic nanoparticle hyperthermia and ionizing radiation treatments in a mouse model for cancer. Established the sensitivity of a murine colorectal adenocarcinoma cell line to hyperthermia and ionizing radiation via clonogenic assay.
