The research focused on the official publications of designated terrorist organisations. The research utilised a corpus linguistic methodology; an advanced quantitative process that identifies linguistic patterns and profiles within bodies of text and assesses their importance in the overall structure of the narrative. This included assessing the publications from groups such as al-Qaeda, Islamic State, al-Shabaab and Boko Haram amongst others in order to identify the narratives utilised to encourage individuals to engage in terrorist acts, both in terms of home-grown terrorism and travel to foreign battlefields. The study allowed conclusions to be drawn on the role that terrorist publications play in the recruitment and radicalisation process of terrorist actors, and the way in which these narratives are constructed to make them attractive to would-be jihadists, allowing for the creation of effective counter-narratives for use in de-escalation projects. At the end of the internship, a policy report will have been created for dissemination to key policy makers and practitioners within the security sector. To prepare for the research, I completed a two week summer school in Swansea which included speakers from organisations such as the Wales Extremism and Counter Terrorism Unit (WECTU), the Royal United Services Institute (RUSI), the United Nations Interregional Crime Research Institute (UNICRI) and NATO Cooperative Cyber Defence Centre of Excellence.Part of this project allowed me to present my research findings to Lord Carlie CBE QC (the former Independent Reviewer of Terrorism Legislation in the United Kingdom), South Wales Police, London Metropolitan Police, the Prevent Coordinator for Welsh Higher Education, Swansea Council, and a Senior Parliamentary Assistant.
