In 2019, I created a summer coding camp for ages 7-14. Over our first summer, we taught just about ten kids out of my dining room with three Desktops. Today we are BX Coding, an official 501c3 non-profit going into our 6th summer of camps with a focus on increasing the accessibility of computing education.Throughout this intense 4 year growth and development, I have fallen in love with the awesome combination of software development, teaching, and design that the domain of computing education offers. My role as co-founder and director of technology at BX Coding allows me to do a little bit of everything. Currently, I am helping revise and develop our summer camp’s curriculum as well as leading the development of a new exciting CS education tool named Patch. It is designed to maintain students’ agency as they learn Python and ease the strain of the transition from the popular block-based graphical programming language Scratch to the text-based programming language Python. If you are a student at all interested in CS education or interested in partnering with us for an outreach program, please reach out! I would love to hear from you.
