San Francisco Bay Area

I completed a paid internship at the San Francisco Botanical Garden. I worked alongside the professional horticulture team in several of the living collections in the garden. I regularly worked with the GIS team cataloguing the plants in several beds of different collections.My primary focus was in three specific collections: the Rhododendron garden, the ancient plant garden and the Mediterranean garden. As an additional project I cleared, formally identified, catalogued and replanted the plants in a large bed within the Mediterranean collection. I greatly valued my time in California, which was partially supported by a horticultural grant from the RHS.

The estate gardens are comprised of a two-acre walled garden, a three-tiered Victorian terrace garden, a kitchen garden and a woodland garden and shrubbery. As part of the horticulture team I was responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of these gardens as well as two smaller cottage gardens on the estate. My main duties included the seasonal changing of beds from spring flowering annuals to autumn flowering perennials; tree pruning, including fruit trees; general weeding and garden maintenance; edging of borders; hedge clipping; harvesting of fruit and vegetables and plant propagation.

I worked as part of a team caring for the private gardens of Lord Moray’s Feuars, located across four sites in Edinburgh’s New Town. My role included the maintenance of the mixed and herbaceous borders, pruning the numerous trees and hedges around the grounds, propagating and planting new additions to the garden as well as the weekly cutting and manicuring of the formal lawns.
