During my additional vacation work at GHD, I worked on internal dry fire, lighting & emergency lighting designs for Living-in Accommodation buildings, substations, and offices. As well as switchboard designs for both three-phase buildings and numerous remote SWER pump sites.On-top of my previous work placement, I did a significant amount of lighting calculations using AGi32 to ensure that the designed lighting of carparks, pathways and rooms are lit to a suitable level of luminance and meet the requirements of the Australian Standards.

During my vacation work experience at GHD, I have gained experience and an understanding in how buildings and telecommunications electrical engineers create and review designs to ensure that its preferential to the customers’ needs and meets the requirements of the various standards relevant to the category of the work performed. I have also become familiar with engineering tools such as PowerCAD, Pathloss 5, Bluebeam Revu, HOMER Pro, and SAM. I’ve also gained experience in the various types of building and telecommunication standards that exist in Australia and gained a valuable insight into how Engineering Consultant companies operate.I was involved in a broad range of project work which proved to be quite interesting. Some tasks included power consumption calculations of building lighting to ensure the building lighting design meets the National Construction Code (NCC), switchboard design, electricity consumption & production analysis, radio signal path calculations, and an overnight trip to Charters Towers to assist a civil engineering colleague with some water sample collections.

During my 3 Months of engineering vacation work experience at Ergon Energy Network, I have learned about the functionality of our electricity network and gained an understanding to how lines designers survey, design, schedule, and execute line installations and upgrades. I have also become familiar with engineering tools such as Cymcap.The tasks I performed contributed to my development of professional engineering experience while also allowing me to utilise and build onto my knowledge and experience in Microsoft Excel, VBA & Python programming, and report writing.
