I am a qualified researcher, consultant and data-analyst in plant sciences and greenhouse technology. Typically I work for the commercial horticulture industry in the sector ‘covered crops’ aka ‘indoor crops’, which often involves hydroponic growing methods. My special interests are greenhouse climate control and energy efficiency. I am based in the Bay of Plenty in New Zealand, and work via my business, Crophouse Ltd (since 1998). I am sometimes open for new projects, in particular smaller computer-based studies. I can best be contacted via email (Elly@crophouse.co.nz).My expertise is based on:• Academic training: BSC, MSc & PhD at Wageningen University in the Netherlands.• Applied research for over 15 years, in the Netherlands and New Zealand (NZ) • Numerous consultancy projects in 25 years (concurrent years), in NZ and overseas. • Work in the kiwifruit industry on several research projects, and data-analysis.• Microsoft certificate in Excel and having built advanced analysis tools in ExcelI have in-depth knowledge on a wide range of topics in indoor growing, e.g. greenhouse climate control, energy efficiency, carbon dioxide, CO2, LED lighting, humidity control, harmful gases. I have basic knowledge of hydroponics, pests & diseases and water treatment in greenhouses. Crops I worked with include tomatoes, capsicums, flowers and other ‘covered crops’. Also, kiwifruit (post-harvest quality). Transferable skills include analyzing facts and processes, problem solving, data processing, programming in Excel (as a certified specialist), modelling, feasibility studies, literature review, consultancy, reporting.

Consultant / Researcher At Crophouse LtdCrophouse Ltd 1998 - PresentBay Of Plenty, New ZealandI completed countless successful investigations and research & innovation projects, and I was expert witness in some legal disputes, related to horticulture and/or plant sciences. I worked for growers, corporates, universities, research centres, government departments and legal professionals. My projects were mostly in New Zealand, Australia and the Netherlands, and some other countries. Most of my work is related to crop production in glasshouses (‘covered crops’), and some to kiwifruit post-harvest quality (see below). -
Project Manager & Researcher In Post-Harvest Kiwifruit At HumeHume Pack-N-Cool 2015 - 2018Katikati, Bay Of Plenty, New ZealandI led a research project on using NIR (near infra red) cameras for measuring the internal quality of kiwifruit while they pass at full speed over the grader. This project, co-founded by Zespri, was very successful and the NIR technology was then widely adopted. Also I built several advanced tools (programmed with visual basic in Excel) for instance for storability, load-out priority, and for plotting and predicting fruit parameters (all related to kiwifruit). -
Researcher In Greenhouse Technology At Wageningen UniversityWageningen University & Research 2008 - 2011Wageningen, Gelderland, NetherlandsResearch on energy efficiency in greenhouses / glasshouses / covered crops. I led a large 18-months project on LED lighting in greenhouses, from acquiring funding to executing the research. LED lighting is now widely used in the Netherlands and many other countries. Also, I assisted in many other research teams and in particular performed the data analysis and reporting on a wide range of topics, e.g. sustainable climate control, energy efficiency, CO2 enrichment, closed greenhouses, hydroponics, controlled ventilation. Also two projects on strawberry and mushroom production. I wrote tens of official publications. -
Researcher In Greenhouse Crops And Micro Biology At Plant & Food ResearchThe New Zealand Institute For Plant And Food Research Limited 1995 - 2003Palmerston North, Wanganui-Manawatu, New ZealandResearch on climate control in greenhouses and on plant nutrition. I was employed at the NZ National Climate Laboratory, part of HortResearch (*) from 1995 to 1998, after immigrating from the Netherlands.Research on micro-biology especially on water treatments for control of root diseases in hydroponically grown crops. I was a guest scientist working on contract at Crop & Food Research (*), from 2000 to 2003.(*) these two institutes merged, and now operate under the name Plant & Food Research. -
Post-Grad Researcher In Greenhouse Climate ControlGlasshouse Crops Research Station (The Netherlands) 1982 - 1994Naaldwijk, The NetherlandsResearch and development in greenhouse / glasshouse technology, including CO2 enrichment, air pollutants, light use efficiency, plant nutrition, physiological disorders in tomatoes, capsicum, (pepper), cucumber, eggplant, flowers. My research on CO2 enrichment resulted in a PhD thesis and was award with the Doctorate degree.
