InternHiv Alliance Sep 2024 - PresentEugene, Oregon, United StatesWorking at a needle exchange and food bank has been both challenging and fulfilling. Each day, I help people dealing with substance use, homelessness, and food insecurity by offering harm reduction tools and essential supplies. Building trust with the community is a vital part of my role, often achieved through simple acts like greeting individuals with respect and listening to their concerns. The fast-paced environment means I'm constantly distributing clean needles, naloxone kits, and food while educating people on overdose prevention and safe practices. Reducing the spread of bloodborne viruses such as HIV and Hepatitis C through clean needle distribution has been a core success of the needle exchange, directly improving community health. At the food bank, we work to combat food insecurity, ensuring families have access to essential groceries. The relief on people’s faces when they receive support is always rewarding. Despite the high stress, seeing people benefit from these services makes it all worthwhile.Through this work, I’ve witnessed shifts in community attitudes towards harm reduction, and I’m proud to have contributed to breaking down stigmas. The relationships I’ve built with clients have shown me the power of empathy, and every small step towards their progress is a success. Working here has taught me invaluable lessons about resilience and the importance of providing a safe space for those in need. -

Here’s a more detailed and polished version that adds depth while maintaining a professional tone:As the Outreach Coordinator for Narcare UO, I am deeply committed to advancing harm reduction and supporting recovery within our campus and broader community. I lead efforts to organize educational campaigns and events that raise awareness about safe practices, overdose prevention, and the importance of destigmatizing substance use and recovery.A key part of my work involves coordinating the distribution of harm reduction supplies, including Naloxone, fentanyl test strips, and safer use kits, to reduce risks and save lives. I actively collaborate with both campus organizations and local community partners to strengthen our network of support, ensuring that essential resources are accessible to everyone. Additionally, I identify and invite knowledgeable guest speakers—experts, advocates, and community leaders—to share insights and foster deeper learning within our club.Through workshops, trainings, and policy advocacy, I strive to create a more compassionate, informed, and inclusive environment where harm reduction is embraced and recovery is celebrated. This work reflects my passion for supporting individuals and building healthier, safer communities. -
