I'm the Founder and Creative Director of IBUKU, an international design studio based in Bali that designs homes, campuses and destinations that reconnect us with nature, ourselves, and each other in new ways. Rooted in bamboo design innovation, we have grown to encompass architectural mixed-media projects. Our process is collaborative, we want to design the best, most magical, and most realistic project for each context. At IBUKU, we merge the artisanal and technological, natural, and modern towards a beautiful future.I was able to share my team's achievements on the TED2015 stage in a TED talk that has had over 5 million views. April 2020 saw the release of our Apple TV+ documentary Home Episode 2. I also was featured as an Architectural Digest Innovator in 2013, and awarded the Honorary Royal Design for Industry in Architecture in 2019. Being raised in Bali I was inspired by the highly-skilled local artisans and their ability to make dreams a reality. Graduating with a Bachelor of Fine Arts from Tufts University, I worked for 5 years in New York before returning to Bali. In 2010 I founded Bamboo Pure and stepped in to lead the design-build team that had created the architecturally award-winning bamboo buildings at Green School (co-founded by my father, John Hardy and stepmom Cynthia Hardy). Under the brand name IBUKU we continued on to design over 200 unique structures over the past decade, including the highly innovative homes at Green Village, projects for luxury resorts including The Four Seasons, Ritz Carlton, and Como hotels, and the award winning gymnasium and wellness center The Arc at Green School Bali. I've led the design team to use natural materials, especially bamboo, in designing homes, educational buildings, gathering spaces, furniture, resorts, master plans, and much more. Through my leadership, the IBUKU studio has now become an incubator to cultivate new ideas borne from collaborations between skilled artisans, innovative designers, and the materials themselves.To share my knowledge about bamboo and my philosophy in design I inspire Bamboo U.
