Head CoachGlasgow University Tennis Club Sep 2014 - Mar 2020Glasgow, United KingdomI have operated as Head Coach for Glasgow University Tennis Club for a number of years. This is a highly demanding an unorthodox role, which can range from small group lessons through to coaching upwards of 40 people over a large number of tennis courts. I have therefore developed a particular specialism in delivering tennis lessons to the student demographic (all abilities), and to exceptionally-large groups of people. The challenge is in providing relevant content to individuals over a wide ability range, and thus my expertise in technical delivery, management of player ability and court space, communication to both individual and group, and selection of appropriate drills tailored for such large numbers, has been heavily honed. This role involves preparation of a tennis coaching programme over an entire semester, and coordination of a number of sub-coaches. I run lessons for players just starting the sport, through to a high-level squad of players looking to transition into playing competitively within the British Universities and College Sport leagues. Excellent communication and delivery skills during, and the ability to take on feedback after lessons, are vital skills here, in addition to a sound base of technical and tactical knowledge of the game. -

Men'S Club CaptainGlasgow University Tennis Club Mar 2014 - Mar 2015GlasgowGlasgow University Tennis Club is effectively a small business, with around 200 active members and an income and expenditure both exceeding £20,000. The Club Captain has the role of president, and presides over a committee and a PR Team. The Club Captain is in charge of all correspondence with members, sponsors, facilities, governing bodies and the university. The role therefore requires excellent organisational and time management skills, as well as the ability to communicate in a professional manner with a variety of different persons. In addition, the captain is responsible for the hiring of all other staff - such as coaches - so must present themselves in an experienced and professional manner. In this regard, the captaincy role gave me valuable insight and experience in to the interview process for the employer/interviewer perspective. Club Captains, in a position of management, must oversee the running of every part of the tennis club, and assist/manage each committee member in their respective roles. The diversity of Glasgow University Tennis Club means that the captain must be able to manage a large variety of different parts of the organisation: coaching, competitive team tennis, facility use, social events, to name a few.Overall, the captaincy role has allowed me to develop a number of skills I feel will be essential in later life: organisational, communication - both through phonecall/email, and in a public speaking capacity, presentation, interviewing, and in particular, management. -

Senior Tennis CoachWestern Lawn Tennis And Squash Club Apr 2013 - Dec 2019GlasgowThis tennis coach role is interesting and challenging as it involves the coach delivering lessons to a variety of different age groups - predominantly children. I have been involved in delivering high quality lessons of varying lengths to age groups from 5 years old up to adult. The delivery to these different age groups must necessarily be different, and I have been praised in the past for my ability to engage with the particular age group I am coaching whilst maintaining a high energy level in the lesson. Technical and tactical knowledge of the game of tennis are also necessities in this role.

Undergraduate Research InternThe University Of Glasgow Jun 2015 - Nov 2015Glasgow, United KingdomA research project within the Aerospace Department, School of Engineering, University of Glasgow. Computational fluid-structure interaction problem concerning optimal methods of energy extraction from the aeroelastic behavior of flapping airfoils. The project focused on the optimization of the energy extraction process, firstly through numerically determining the conditions of maximum power extraction for the self-sustaining case, then through optimization of the pitching motion in the semi-activated case. The research includes theoretical analysis in the fields of aeroelasticity, unsteady aerodynamics and dynamical systems, as well as coding work in Fortran 95 and Matlab. Experience using Linux/Unix also gained. Technical report produced in LaTeX. -
