Kenyan Department of Agriculture and commercial grower associations ( BSc thesis: Measuring and Accrediting the Carbon Footprint of Export Horticultural Produce from Kenya: Industry Attitudes and Capacity)Although ostensibly, a doctoral research project, the underpinning aim was to effect knowledge transfer and build capacity within the Kenyan horticultural sector to measure and reduce carbon emissions and water consumption. The incorporation of training for an MSc Agriculture graduate from the University of Nairobi in the application of a Permaculture design approach, LCA and CBA and the development of test and learn strategies, practical carbon reduction training for farm staff and small independent growers. This was linked to a programme of engagement and awareness raising and training on data collection for Farm managers and pack house staffThe methodology for the overall project was developed using Permaculture design In contrast to many prior LCA studies of Kenyan exports the data collected was gleaned direct observation and mapping inputs/outputs and worker behaviour at every stage of the supply chain from field to UK RDC, a creative test and learn approach to emissions reduction with linked to cost benefit analysis in order to build a business case for carbon reduction.
