About Elton Searcy

I'm a guy who likes to get things done with a high level of skill and attention to detail. While many of my skills are related to jobs I've had. I have a thirst for knowledge outside of work that keeps me always working on fun and interesting projects. (IOT, Devops, Clustering, Web design, Carpentry, Jewelry, Jerky, Home improvements). For fun I enjoy snowboarding, scooba, building out my camper van, dancing, camping and so much more. I'm a very social and outgoing person but keep a small inner circle of friends who I trust and love.Looking at my resume or job history might feel a little confusing in terms of what my focus is so I'll lay it out here.I started my career as a professional consultant for 4 years (Teradata) where I'd work with fortune 500 companies in planning and implementing new and interesting proof of concepts for various big data and machine learning projects. Here I would get a heads up on new projects and the technologies involved, then I'd spend some time training up and building example projects using those technologies before starting with each client. This experience ranged from application development (java, python, hadoop), ETL, to Devops and cloud service management and involved me traveling onsite to work with clients nearly every week. It generally made me comfortable jumping into new technologies and teams with the confidence to get myself trained up and able to make an impact quickly. From there I began working on CBDC's (central bank digital currency management systems) for a little over 3 years and picked up Elixir as our main application language. I really enjoyed working in elixir so I've kept those skills close to my heart. At this company (Bitt) we built some really interesting blockchain backed financial systems that were meant to help bank the unbanked and make digital markets more available to people in countries where getting something like a bank account was challenging. In the end the project did catch on with a few central banks but the company didn't financially survive so I switched gears to finding somewhere I could improve my elixir skills further.Thats when I started at Simplebet. Working there was fun and they had a great team of senior and very knowledgable engineers. My time there was all about improving many of my own best practices around not only elixir but also around tracing, logging and observability. There I picked upon some new tools that I'd always opt for if given the choice.I'm always looking for ways to improve and further my career/skills, so shoot me a message sometime!

This is a startup of mine that I started this past winter. Its focus is R&D for a drone-based service, there is still a lot of work to do but you can think of the main system as being drone flight software. While the product is a service that I can offer people & property owners.I’m switching my full-time focus to finding a new full-time job while this becomes more of a weekend only thing.- Sole dev, this was something I wanted to officially start for a very long time.- I’ve been using 3d printing to build each drone then I assemble/build the hardware/microelectronics as necessary.- Involves a lot of testing and breaking/fixing the drones.- Using elixir/phoenix for the initial version of the control software.- Using elixir/nerves + python for the initial version of the drone systems.- Drone control software is hosted locally in Kubernetes, drone software is deployed as the operating system for raspberry pi’s (Nerves).- Implemented basic navigation, basic obstacle avoidance, and grid/gps point navigation.- Next phase is to increase size and payload weight so I can start loading some equipment onto the drones like metal detectors.

    Draper, Utah, Us
Here we worked on deploying our system for additional clients around the world. (Nigeria & Belize). As Architect I worked a lot more with new and existing clients. I also focused on making our platform more configurable and added integrations so our clients could leverage more of their own systems in tandem with ours. This was a very hands-on role.• Worked with development, product, and client teams to design, debug, and extend our central bank software offering. (a digital currency SaaS platform).• Built out and epics and worked with the team to complete them.• Implemented additional blockchain support (HLF, Stellar), as a secondary datastore to our database for historicalintegrity.• Spent a lot of time in SRE/Devops role to meet needs on team till we were able to backfill SRE lead role. Then trained them up on the system so I could go back to development.• Travel onsite when necessary to deploy and train clients on the platform's technical usage.• Managed and supported multi-stage, multi client production environments w/ on-call responsibilities.

    Draper, Utah, Us
Here I started as backend tech lead and helped build out one of Medici’s client’s platforms (Bitt Inc) with the help of our product, design, and developer teams. I was a primary contributor to the codebase. The team grew to about 20 people.• Lead the development for our multi-level central bank digital currency platform. - CMD (central bank management dashboard)- FID (financial institution management)- Mobile Apps (to allow end users to manage/spend/receive their money)• Take on and implement Features/Epics.• Establish best practices and mentor newly formed elixir team, we all cross trained from Java/Kotlin to elixir for the Bittproject.• Develop solutions on Google Cloud Platform and leveraged the available technologies.• Implement tracer versions of features and services that we’d flush out if we liked them.• Experiment with various blockchain and identity management technologies to enhance the platform. We spent roughly three years building out a new digital currency central banking system for the ECCB (Eastern Caribbean Central Bank) that was backed by a hyperledger blockchain solution and has been deployed to be used out in production. This project included 4 different teams of roughly 27/30 people, of those teams I helped kickoff three of them and lead the overall backend design and implementation using mainly elixir and google cloud services.we eventually setup a dedicated java team for implementing the blockchain transactions. We also had two principals engineers (devops) and one other team driver along with me to help build out and mentor the team.
  • Ohio Department Of Developmental Disabilities
    Senior Engineer
Ohio Department Of Developmental Disabilities Dec 2018 - Jun 2019
    Columbus, Ohio, Us
As a teradata engineer:This was a Joint project for DODD (Ohio Department of Developmental Disabilities) where our team was responsible for building reliable data pipelines and processing patterns to keep DODD's Hadoop data lake in sync with their SQL Server backed data_mart.As we built this, the other team 'Qlarant' was responsible for building and generating administrative dashboards that were used to identify fraud using the data we provided. On our team we had a Solutions Architect, myself as Lead Engineer, and Another Engineer who focused more so on loading data and helping to ensure the other team was provided the data they needed and were unblocked. My Role on the team was to Learn Stream-sets and build several reliable data pipeline methodologies that we could use to load various patterns of data through. (Historical, Incremental, CDC). As I completed pipelines, I'd have knowledge transfers with the DODD's engineers where we would discuss and sometimes they'd request changes depending on how they wanted to organize and structure the data.In parallel to the development of data pipelines, I was also responsible for ensuring that we stayed on track with migrating data into hadoop by implementing several of the pipelines I'd design each week.

    Bnsf Railway Feb 2018 - May 2018
    Fort Worth, Texas, Us
As a teradata engineer:This project was handed off to me as the senior engineer about half way through the engagement. Unfortunately before I joined, our team had been having many issues with meeting the contract deliverables and the client was unhappy with how the project was going. My job was to help get the project back on track by taking over ownership of the deliverables, I off-boarded the current team, and ensured that when the project was over all of the requirements were met for each one. After a few months I was able to restore the clients confidence by meeting the project deliverables and teaching the client how to use what was built for them.
  • Qualcomm
    Senior Data Engineer
    Qualcomm Dec 2017 - Mar 2018
    San Diego, Ca, Us
As a teradata engineer:This project was a proof of concept to help Qualcomm's engineers move toward using an open source Hadoop Data Lake architecture to handle growing data demands.Leveraging Kylo/Nifi on a hadoop data lake environment that we setup, we built several data pipelines and data analyst access points that engineers at Qualcomm could use to automate data ingestion and gain further insights into their data.Using pipelines built against their business needs as a template, we were able to teach Qualcomms engineers how to use these open source technologies to help consolidate the technology stack currently being used for data ingestion and to help prepare for future scalable data pipeline development. My role on this was to ensure the technical requirements asked for by the client were met and to help plan out the technologies/methods in which we would meet those requirements. The overall outcome was very receptive from the client and they were a pleasure to work with.
