As part of the Market Transformation group within BC Hydro’s Conservation & Energy Management division, I work with government and industry to advance codes, policy, and standards for efficient, electrified buildings, transportation and communities. Specifically, I lead and oversee the development and implementation of market transformation roadmaps, plans and strategies, including identifying regulatory and policy tools. I liaise externally with government and industry organizations on regulatory and policy pathways to efficiently electrify buildings and transportation. I build partnerships for collaborative projects including research and pilot studies supporting code, policy, and standards implementation.Additionally, I liaise internally within BC Hydro on barriers and opportunities linked with regulatory and policy pathways being advanced by partner organizations. I also oversee primary and secondary research, commission consulting assignments, and prepare discussion papers.

Elyse specializes in energy efficiency consulting and building science research. Her work includes whole-building energy modelling, emission reduction feasibility studies, and research to inform policy and program development. Key project themes include the evaluation of energy, greenhouse gas, and incremental costs for energy retrofits of existing condominiums and non-profit housing, as well as new construction in British Columbia. Her project focus is to lead analysis that informs building code energy targets at all levels of government as well as Demand Side Management (DSM) programs with local utilities. Elyse also contributes to knowledge dissemination of industry best practices to achieve high performance buildings and new policies such as the BC Energy Step Code through the development of industry guideline material and presentations.

The Impact Centre (IMC) facilitates the advancement of scientific knowledge by bridging the gap between research at the University of Toronto and the needs of society. Elyse advanced the IMC's Smart Sustainable Lighting Network (SSLNet) and Cleantech Industry Cluster by expanding valuable industry connections, compiling up-to-date information on the clean technology trends in Canada and the USA, and organizing comprehensive workshops. She also helped run the elite entrepreneurship training program, Techno, for science and engineering students to learn the fundamentals of commercialization and creation of technology-based start-ups.

Elyse was an invited energy-efficiency consultant at the SavingsByDesign integrated design process (IDP) workshops, with a focus on LED lighting. This program is a green building initiative offered by Enbridge Gas Distribution and facilitated by Sustainable Buildings Canada – created to help builders design and construct buildings and houses with higher energy performance.Workshops helped large building developers understand the benefits of using energy-efficiency technology and low impact development (LID) – keeping in mind provincial and municipal regulations.

Gained expertise in atmospheric chemistry by studying environmentally-relevant reactions at air-water interfaces, using spectroscopic techniques. Main research topic was: 'The Influence of Organic Coatings on Atmospheric Processes at the Air-Water Interface.'Developed skills for identifying and solving complex problems. Became adept at scientific writing and communication. Used complex data analysis techniques and am comfortable with many measurement instruments.

Toronto On

Mentored up to 26 students at a time during laboratory experiments. Instructed undergraduate and graduate students to help them carry out projects during lab courses such as Environmental Analytical Chemistry and Physical Chemistry.Reviewed and edited papers written by students for undergraduate Environmental Chemistry courses.

As the project leader for water conservation efforts at Wilson Hall residence on campus, Elyse coordinated infrastructure changes and used behaviour-modification techniques to decrease water consumption. She analyzed water usage data from previous years as a baseline so that the effect of our campaign can be measured quantitatively over future years.This 6-month program to audit and decrease water consumption on campus, led to thousands of dollars in water rebates. Through this project, Elyse gained an understanding of institutional financial motives for implementing environmental programs as well as the intricacies of navigating administrations.
