Profile bio

About Em Luber

I earned a bachelors degree in the field of neuroscience, with a minor in Spanish and an equivalent minor in psychology, graduating Magna Cum Laude from Middlebury College. My previous experience working both as a volunteer research assistant and as a student researcher in Mark Spritzer’s Behavioral Neuroendocrinology Laboratory at Middlebury College enabled me to develop skills in research methodology, rodent work, and data analysis. In this lab, I studied the effects of testosterone on response learning strategy in male rats. The goal of this research is to develop therapies to treat age-related memory loss, particularly focusing on the role of testosterone in regulating growth factors and cell death pathways.Outside of the lab, I have four years of experience working as an EMT-B, both at Middlebury Regional EMS and at Fair Haven Rescue Squad. In my years working in EMS, I have learned to think on my feet, to be decisive and bold, and to constantly strive to better my understanding of medicine in order to provide the best possible care for my patients.Currently, I work for the Allen Institute for Brain Science as a Research Associate on the Gene Therapy team. I assist in the development and testing of new therapeutic AAVs to treat brain disorders, including severe forms of epilepsy and other neurodevelopmental diseases using a novel AAV-based cell type-specific expression system. In this role, I perform advanced stereotaxic mouse surgeries such as EEG/EMG electrode implantation, local field potential electrode implantation, and intracranial microinjection, as well as conduct mouse behavioral testing.
