Molecular Technician
I was responsible for performing RT-PCR reactions to determine a positive or negative Covid-19 result. I worked alongside a team of technicians and technologists to complete this process. My main responsibility was to conduct maintenance, surveillance and preparation of multiple, large high-volume scientific machines. I also troubleshooted the machinery and software. I am seen a strong trainer when it comes to teaching others on operating and theory of PCR machinery, lab techniques, software and safety. I joined EORLA at a stressful time. Covid-19 was just picking up for the fall 2020 season and the shortage of licensed technicians and technologists had strained the ability to process Covid-19 samples quickly. Due to the shortage, highly trained and specialized recent graduates were able to be hired perform testing during the pandemic. Many of my own ideas and processes paved many of the protocols to be streamlined and improving turn around times for samples. Successes included processing over 5000 specimens in a 24 hour period for the entire team. We were able to reduce turn around times significantly. Additionally, as the pandemic continued the team of molecular technicians were able to expand our responsibilities to running larger machinery, learning laboratory information systems, and performing more complex scientific reactions. I also led a quality assurance project with a small team to collect documentation of inventory in the lab and supporting safety documents.
Beaker Credential Trainer
I was responsible for training EORLA lab employees on the implementation of Epic's Beaker at The Ottawa Hospital. In this role, trained super-users and end-users for the launch of this laboratory information system. I have learned how to effectively use and troubleshoot the software to ensure it is working correctly and according to protocol.Success in this role has been that I am able to diagnose, test, and communicate quickly any software errors for on-site support at go-live to ensure minimal impact for both the patients and the users. I am also proud of the success of all my trainees. Their determination and patience helped make this go-live smooth and successful.
Server
I was responsible for ensuring costumer service and satisfaction at an upscale restaurant on the waterfront. I was a strong server that is able to handle many tables, bills, floor organization and reservations while communicating professionally to costumers and working as a team with front of house and back of house staff. Additionally, I created the section floorplan for the restaurant to ensure clarity and equal volume to all serving staff.
Research Assistant
I was a summer student researcher supported by OHRI in the Brain and Mind Institute. I continued as an Honours student in the same lab once the fall began to work on my final project. I researched how stress impacted genetically modified mice with decreased 5-HT1A autoreceptors; receptors responsible for the regulation of serotonin in the brain. I preformed mouse behaviour, statistical analysis using PRISM software, and immunohistochemistry. My findings were presented at uOttawa's first Faculty of Medicine Research Day.
Pharmacy Technician
I entered, filled, and dispensed prescriptions and compounds while providing high quality patient service and confidentiality. Additionally I maintained inventory of the pharmacy and checks of controlled substance inventory.
