I worked as the on-field emergency physician in the ambulance vehicle and a dispatcher at the emergency call center in Zagreb - the busiest sector for emergency medicine in Croatia. Both positions required good communication skills with patients, their families, and the team that I was in charge of. Working in the field meant making do in non-standard, unpredictable, and often suboptimal conditions that required resourcefulness, quick thinking, and a critical approach. I had to quickly and precisely assess situations, triage patients, and decide on a plan of action whether it meant treating a patient at home or stabilizing them and transferring them to the appropriate medical facility. I worked 12 hours long day and night shifts, each time in a different neighborhood whit its socio-economic particularities, and with different team members, all of which demanded a high level of adaptiveness and social intelligence. Entering people’s homes has given me a unique perspective of the living and health conditions of the nation, while collaboration with different healthcare providers provided insight into (dis)functionalities of our public and private healthcare systems.

Before acquiring a medical license in Croatia, young doctors had to complete five months internship consisting of clinical rotations in Gynecology and Obstetrics, Surgery, Internal medicine, and Pediatrics, and external rotations at a General Practitioner Office and in Prehospital Emergency Medicine. My responsibilities included presenting patients in morning rounds to senior physicians, taking patients' medical histories upon admission, filing medical information into the database, measuring patients' vital parameters, doing physical exams, taking up blood samples, and performing basic medical procedures under the supervision of senior doctors.This internship provided a solid knowledge and skill base for my future independent medical practice as a general medicine doctor; it gave me first-hand experience within the Croatian primary and secondary healthcare system as well as insight into the state of health and health education in Croatia.

In 2015 I was elected as the Vice President of the Youth Council of the City of Rijeka - an advisory body established to promote and support the rights, needs, and interests of young people at a local level, adopting programs and other acts of relevance, preparing, implementing and monitoring local youth projects.
