After I completed my degree, I was like most grads - directionless.I was just trying my luck at anything and everything, grabbing opportunities wherever possible and that's how I landed my first sales job. I understood this isn't my calling, but I was clueless. And like all clueless ones I kept jumping from one industry to another hoping to land into something I truly enjoyed. It was during this season that I realised thatI might be a SALESPERSON BY PROFESSION, BUT I WAS A PEOPLE PERSON AT HEARTWith every lead I reached out to, I would end up empathising and trying to help them with the best possible solution even if it differed from my product’s interest. I'd get engrossed in long and genuine conversations with them that I didn't want to ruin by pitching a product. This would often mean I didn't meet the sales targets.One of the prospects said this during my conversation with him, "Even though I was not into your product, I thoroughly enjoyed this conversation and the heartwarming touch you brought to it. Speaking about things that I enjoyed listening to, you're good at connecting with people."To me being genuine and helping people out mattered way more than meeting my sales targets...This was a big no-no in the sales industry & it forced me to sit down and evaluate my strengths and career path. I spent some time introspecting..WHAT WAS IT THAT REALLY MADE MY HEART SKIP A BEAT?I did some soul searching, spoke to people who knew me best, thought long and hard and noticed a pattern:My adrenaline used to hit the roof every time I was helping the younger generations through their problems. I especially loved helping them through the beginning stages of their career… So that they can learn from my mistakes. That's when I decided to help them every single day by becoming a counsellor.
