Dr. Emily Mangone is an global health innovator with 18 years of experience whose goal is to advance women’s reproductive health and empowerment. Emily currently serves as the Program Officer for the Innovation and Implementation Research Initiative on the Family Planning Team at the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. In this role, Emily manages an investment portfolio that focuses on innovation and implementation research to discover, adapt and demonstrate real–world effectiveness of and ability to scale high-impact supply and demand-side interventions, including direct-to-consumer platforms/digital counseling, digital social and behavior change communication approaches, and private sector (pharmacy/drug shop) delivery of FP information, products, and services. Prior to joining the BMGF in 2021, Emily served as the senior technical advisor for digital health on the USAID-funded Sustaining Health Outcomes through the Private Sector (SHOPS) Plus project, implemented by Abt Associates. In this role, she provided strategic leadership, technical oversight, and creative vision to help country programs leverage digital technology and data analytics to achieve their objectives and increase their health impact. She has also served as a technical specialist in the fields of reproductive health and research and evaluation and led mixed method program evaluations, cost-effectiveness modeling, and HIV/FP market assessments. Emily has advanced proficiency in French and experience leading technical assistance and research activities in Ethiopia, Madagascar, DRC, Cote d’Ivoire, Senegal, Nigeria, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa, Haiti, India, and Pakistan. Emily holds a PhD in Health Policy and Management from UNC Chapel Hill and an MSc in Global Health Sciences from UCSF.
