NC DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH & HUMAN SERVICES (DHHS), Raleigh, NCPublic Health Scientist, 10/2021 to 10/2022Recruited as one of only a few people in the state who could direct time-sensitive pandemic testing. As the only public health scientist at DHHS, initiated a project to begin wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) targeting COVID-19 and whole genome sequencing (WGS). Contract not renewed due to funding.• Bridging teams of epidemiologists and laboratory specialists, built the state’s only system capable of tracking COVID-19 WBE trends; every week, the GIS system produces new data sets to assess impacts of infectious disease on the community level (approx. 6M people)• Self-taught necessary technical and bio-chemistry skills, then trained junior staff on use of QIAGEN digital PCR platform to statistically calculate COVID-19 output values • Extracted viral and bacterial nucleic acid via two platforms: (1) Biomerieux (Kingfisher system) and (2) QIAgen AllPrep PowerViral DNA/RNA extraction kit (QIAcube system)• Performed complex statistical analysis with the DHHS epidemiology team

Served as director of the environmental microbiology lab concurrent with other research and teaching positions at the university (see below). See the Water Institute’s online knowledge hub. • Received C. Felix Harvey Award ($50K) honoring faculty whose proposals positively impact constituencies outside the University (2020)• In addition to the projects in the “Career Highlights” section, recent research includes:  Performed ICC q-PCR analyses of reclaimed water and sewage samples from major U.S. water utility, as a step in improving current wastewater reuse processes and providing recommendations for risk management  Estimated proportion of Carbapenem-Resistant Enterobacteriaceae (CRE) cases that are community-associated and detected transmission of carbapenem resistance within the community (a major public health threat)• Earned two Gold Medals for Best Laboratory Practices (2018, 2017)

Recent research includes:  Served on a global team that advised WHO to set up the first integrated, scalable tool for monitoring, analysis, and decision support (One Health) that allows non-technical stakeholders to assess antimicrobial resistance (AMR) hazards and prioritize interventions  Reformulating Proprietary Disinfectant to Enhance Inactivation of Protozoan Cysts & Other Chlorine-Resistant Pathogens: Tested the chemistry of various novel disinfectant formulations against existing products. Collaborated with Medentech Ltd. to optimize tablet formulation for water disinfection as an alternative to Aquatabs®.  Enhancing Efficacy of Peracetic Acid for Disinfection of Hospital Waste & Surfaces: Engaged by Eastman Chemical Research and Development Department to develop a simple, step-wise disinfection protocol for a proprietary peracetic acid formulation. Evaluated effectiveness against microorganisms of public health concern and compared with other disinfectants using U.S. EPA and NSF-International standards.

Supported Sanitary Intervention in Medical Emergencies (SANIMEDE), a project on on-site disinfection of Vibrio cholerae and other bacteria and viruses in high-risk human wastes (HRHW). Ph.D. research findings resulted in $500K USAID grant to fight the next Ebola outbreak. Then, relocated to the U.S.• Won Brighton Santander Travel Grant (2013) to build a long-term UK–Brazil collaboration• Designed on-site engineering infrastructure and waste management systems in emergency settings to reduce spread of infectious disease• Completed pro bono engagements for Doctors without Borders (interventions for prevention of infectious disease outbreaks in Haiti) and Oxfam (interventions in Philippines and Myanmar)

Took one-year sabbatical from Accenture to respond to post-earthquake cholera epidemic in the high-risk, high-pressure scenario of an emergency response. Then, exited Accenture to pursue Ph.D. studies.• Implemented plans to disinfect hazardous waste and wastewater, reduce environmental risks to soil and other natural resources, and guarantee access to potable water; built multiple large-scale plants; featured on cover of PLOS Neglected Tropical Diseases (06/2015)• Addressed Haiti’s first Cholera outbreak in 100+ years as the water & sanitation supervisor at three cholera treatment centers, leading up to 85 people as one of the youngest responders
