I became a journalist in the middle of the disruptive shift to digital, as a multimedia content creator using emerging technology to tell compelling stories. Frustrated by the generic experience of news websites and apps, I knew we could do better. I refocused my career on software development to help media companies create more user-responsive products and am currently the product director at The Intercept, where I oversee improvements to all digital platforms. As a mobile product manager at the Wall Street Journal, I introduced personalization by launching MyWSJ, a content recommendation section powered by AI and machine learning. To help bring user-specific experiences to the lock screen, I introduced personalized push notifications. We saw a 12% increase in daily unique visitors after three months, and we won a Webby for the app, too.I joined HuffPost at a time when its business was struggling, running annual losses in the tens of millions of dollars. As head of product, I built deep partnerships with editorial and business leadership to launch a two-tiered membership program that reached 40,000 members in just over three months, and mobilized the team to design, build and execute it in less than four months. It was the fastest growing membership program in all of Verizon Media Group and brought in a new revenue stream that helped cut operating losses in half.At The Atlantic, I saw a storied institution of American journalism struggling to reach profitability despite the outsize influence of its COVID and social justice coverage in 2020. As executive director of product, I focused on ways to add more value to the subscription. I oversaw complex projects such as the launch of a new subscriber-only newsletter program, re-platforming of the article page, and publication of the entire magazine archive back to 1857.Of course, none of this happens alone, and I’ve dedicated my time in product to building deep and trusting relationships with editorial and business partners, fostering an inclusive and transparent product practice that supports collaboration and partnership throughout. I believe that a people-centered culture and user-centered product experience are the key ingredients to the success of digital products.
