About E. Michele Ramsey

Dr. E. Michele Ramsey is an Associate Professor of Communication Arts & Sciences and Women's, Gender, and Sexuality Studies at Penn State Berks. She established the Communication Arts & Sciences major at Penn State Berks in 2007. She is also a General Education Faculty Scholar at Pennsylvania State University. She teaches courses in Public Speaking, Careers in Communication, Feminist Thought, Conflict Management, Rhetoric of Television and Film, Rhetoric of American Horror Films, Women's Public Address, Black American Rhetoric, Social Movements, and Contemporary American Political Communication. Her college has honored her with the Outstanding Faculty Advisor Award in 2006 and the Outstanding Faculty Service Award in 2009. The Pennsylvania State University Women's Commission honored her with the Achieving Woman Award in 2010 and the Rosemary Schraer Mentoring Award in 2015. The Pennsylvania State University Commission on Lesbian, Gay, Bi-Sexual, and Transexual Equity honored her with the Excellence in Curricular Integration Award in 2008. The Junior League of Reading honored her with their Community Partnership Award in 2016. In 2001, she won the Cheris Kramarae Dissertation Award from the Organization for the Study of Communication, Language, and Gender and in 2017, she was honored with their Feminist Teaching/Mentoring Award. Her research interests include representations of marginalized populations in the media, women's rights rhetoric, social movement rhetoric, feminist rhetorical criticism, the rhetoric of horror film, and political rhetoric. Her book, "Major Decisions: College, Career, and the Case for the Humanities", co-authored with Laurie Grobman, is a March 2020 release from the University of Pennsylvania Press. Her work has been published in the Western Journal of Communication, Critical Studies in Media Communication, Women's Studies in Communication, Feminist Media Studies, Women and Language, and the Journal of Religion and Business Ethics.She is the co-PI on two grants from The Teagle Foundation and the NEH ($25,000 in 2021 and $350,000 in 2022) to create and implement the Keystone Certificate throughout the Penn State system.She has presented a number of workshops in her community and outside of it, including media literacy and iParenting workshops for parents, conflict management, and emotional labor, and has served on a number of film panels dealing with issues of gender and media, citizenship and film, and worldwide girls' education.

    Dr. E. Michele Ramsey is an associate professor of Communication Arts & Sciences and Women's Studies and founded the major in Communication Arts & Sciences at the college.
