This is my former hospital affiliation and faculty title, although I perform my 1,000 procedures per year at my own laser center on Park Ave. South, since NYEE's Vision Correction Center (VCC) went "dark" (i.e., dead) in 2005 due to "structural problems" (i.e., mismanagement)--don't you like my use of my MBA to speak in lingo?:) Recently, in 2010, they resurrected their laser center from the grave, but may still have problems because the full-time MDs on faculty at NYEE who do the most procedures actually have minority ownership in a competing LASIK center, which doesn't make that much sense, and means they will bring their cases there. The #1 LASIK surgeon at NYEE in terms of volume left the center when it closed, so that killed their volume. It's necessary to do about 1,000 cases per year to "feed" (support) a laser so it's profitable. I actually proposed that rather than re-opening their center (again), their residents could rotate through my LASEK center, as currently they get very little refractive experience, like may graduate having performed a grand total of 1 LASIK themselves. This might have been acceptable 15 years ago when I was doing my residency at Harvard, but is not acceptable now that Refractive Surgery (LASIK, LASEK, etc.) is a larger subspecialty by volume of surgeries per year and total dollar value than either glaucoma or pediatric ophthalmology (but the credentialing service for ophthalmology is way behind the times, and mandates like a dozen pediatric or glaucoma procedures for a resident to graduate, but i think currently 0 refractive cases, which is crazy). Unfortunately, there's a lot of "politics" in terms of hospitals choosing where there residents are trained, and they rarely let residents rotate "off-site" to MDs private practices, because they want to "control" their training, even though 90% of residents will enter private practice, not academic medicine, and then know 0 about billing, coding, supervising staff, etc. Oh, well!:)
