Process research and development laboratory and process control laboratory Manager. Part of the Technical department of the Acton Precious Metal refinery I facilitated the work of the R&D chemists to address processing issues, process improvement initiatives, commercial exploration, routine safety checks...I was also in charge of the process control laboratory and responsible for the plant's environmental monitoring execution.•Early on in this position I developed systems and KPIs with the chemists to ensure the work performed was in line with the process department's needs and priorities. •Lead small 6 sigma projects to improve delivery of routine tests. This combined with 5S implementation in the laboratories resulted in elimination of routine test results late deliveries, in turn reducing delays to production.•Fostered good open communication among chemists to maximise creativity, they were also able to take over from one another in case of absences. •Communicated with production to gain understanding of problems encountered on the shop floor and to implement practical solutions.•Responsible for the health and safety of everyone in my team I engaged the team members in putting together risk assessments, keeping SOPs up to date. Reformed the COSHH assessments in collaboration with the SHE department, reducing the number of COSHH assessments from 237 to 28 plant-wide, resulted in better communication of their content and easier updating.•Deputised for departmental manager by attending quarterly toll business meetings and weekly engineering priority meetings ensuring works required in the technical department were given due priority•I efficiently conducted incident investigations, by getting to root cause(s) and putting preventative measures in place to avoid recurrences.•I also conducted disciplinary investigations. I was part of a team of research and development chemists working on laboratory based projects supporting the process operations of the Acton Precious Metal RefineryDeveloped knowledge of the process flow sheet and chemistry of individual operations to support process operations with improvement suggestions, trouble shooting, new material feeds, routine safety testingby setting up adequate experiments in the laboratory, reporting results and conclusion in different format (memos, technical memos, verbal presentations).-liaising with production to find out about difficulties encountered and suggest improvements -organising process trials when laboratory results were promising including all safety precautions and ensuring no detrimental effect on production targetsMy work on one of the precious metal's process resulted in -reducing retention time of this particular metal by 30% -losses lowered by 5% in average -monthly production target consistently met (v.s below target for consecutive 10 months prior project implementation)Followed the process control laboratory training to offer cover as of when required. Used-Atomic Absorbance spectrometer -UV-visible spectrometer -Wet titration -various technique for environmental monitoring outside the laboratoryI was able to quickly provide efficient cover for the process control laboratory as of when needed and carry on my research and development work in parallel.
