Led the effort to analyze of all aspects of accuracy and precision for Shaper’s core technologies. This included development of instrumentation, internal tools, and processes, amassing a broad knowledge base that serves future product development.Co-developed and deployed a computerized factory test system used to verify assembly steps and perform calibration tasks. This included a dashboard which allowed us to monitor production statistics and identify line issues before line down situations. On Thursdays sometimes I barbecued.Shaper was acquired by Festool.

Created a process for optimization of imaging heads for future products and to establish the viability of new technologies and ideas for imaging. I planted the seed for large-range electronic image stabilization that launched with Hero 8 and Max.Curated an internal knowledge base and facilitated inter-departmental communication of imaging-related information which is still in use today.Coached younger team members and encouraged the exploration and development of new skills.

Developed algorithm and delivered code for a novel factory camera calibration. Led and coordinated a team crossing departmental boundaries to reduce variation in image quality with temperature. The tools and procedures I put in place are now part of the development process and have monotonically improved performance generation over generation.I also got people to eat tacos on some Tuesdays.

In charge of research projects in and out of the Lucas Wind Tunnel, leading a group of 4-6 people.Most of my time was spent on a project to increase the efficacy of the rudder on large commercial airplanes. We successfully tested this at full scale on a real 757 tail with Boeing and NASA at The NFAC's 40x80 wind tunnel. The concept was then flown on the 757 Eco Demonstrator (registration N757ET).I was a key technical member in projects that have brought in over $2M (including overhead, of course!). These projects funded students and engineers which I supervised.

Taught Ae104 (Experimental Methods).There is nothing like the feeling you get when you meet a youngster who is so full of ambition, tenacity, and raw talent. Some of the people in this class I would like to follow for their whole careers.And then there were the ones that made me want to go apologize to all my teachers for ever being a little brat.

What started out as "helping out" during grad school flourished into a wonderful paying hobby. Through many projects, I learned a lot and met a lot of great, enthusiastic people. Looking back, this really laid the foundation for my varied work throughout the rest of my career, where I enjoyed working on all aspects of a machine, enjoying various details in different disciplines, rather than concentrating on one part only. That type of "whole package" work is something I get really excited about.

Worked on a variety of projects in the capacity of mechanical engineer/analyst, optomechanical designer, optical designer, and project manager. Projects included vibration isolation platforms, LIDAR systems, a portable digital microscope, digital indicator to PC electronics, software optimization, and hardware performance testing.

Manufacturers of solid state laser-based sensors. I wrote the user-end software to interface with custom acquisition hardware. I also managed the firmware specification and wrote test tools. This is where I got my first taste in optical design.

Performed feasibility analysis on gas centrifuge technology for the separation of carbon dioxide from methane. This resulted in a patent (US patent no. 6,716,269).
