The University of Calgary has identified 6 strategic research themes as part of the Eyes High Strategy to drive the university to become one of Canada’s top 5 research universities. One of these themes is “Engineering Solutions for Health: Biomedical Engineering”.In my role, I contribute to the strategic planning and implementation of the Biomedical Engineering Research Strategy as part of the Vice-President (Research) portfolio. I am responsible for supporting collaborations between researchers within the biomedical engineering theme, across the University of Calgary, and with industry, government, and other external partners to position biomedical engineering both nationally and internationally.

Teaching the third year Biomechanics course for the Bachelor of Health and Physical Education degree.

Research has shown that traditional oral appliance therapy is only effective in 60% of all sleep apnea patients. Zephyr has developed technology to predict whether a patient will be successful with oral appliance therapy, as well as the optimal setting for the oral appliance to be most effective.I am responsible for managing all aspects of a clinical trial using remotely controlled mandibular protrusion during sleep to predict therapeutic success with an oral appliance in patients with obstructive sleep apnea. In addition to developing and implementing study procedures for patient recruitment, data collection and analysis, I ensure that the research project meets study milestones and grant reporting requirements, maintain records of project progress, and ensure quality of data.

As a member of the Trainee Leaders Committee I attend all communications meetings, and circulate information to the trainees. I also participate in organizing seminars, planning annual meetings and reviewing travel grant applications. My involvement in these committees has allowed me to learn about executive management from leaders and professionals. The opportunity to be so closely involved in team planning, project development, partnership management and knowledge translation output will be invaluable in my training to become an academic leader.

JURA is a multidisciplinary journal that aims to provide undergraduate students at the University of Calgary with a peer-reviewed outlet for their research. I am responsible for advertising, handling all submissions, recruiting reviewers, overseeing the review process, and all aspects of publishing a journal. This opportunity has allowed me to experience the peer-review process first-hand, as well as the steps necessary to make research performed at the university level available for researchers around the world.

Worked with a team of five graduate students to organize the Alberta BME Conference. My responsibilities included ordering registration gifts ($3,700 budget), recruiting and managing undergraduate volunteers, and communicating with University of Alberta student volunteers. I reviewed and ranked 52 undergraduate applications for funding. My role thus far with BMEG has allowed me to greatly improve my planning and organizational skills, and has also taught me how to work effectively in a team. This will help me to plan similar events at the University of Calgary and elsewhere in research environments to promote multidisciplinary interaction among students and colleagues.
