I am an experienced GP (Mattishall Surgery since 2007) and while I love the challenges of busy NHS practice I am delighted to have the opportunity in the private sector to really be able to give women the time they need. In general practice we are used to taking a ‘whole-person’ approach to our patients and this ethos translates well to menopause care - the journey can affect both physical and mental health in a huge variety of ways. I completed my medical training at Cambridge university and spent several years in hospital medicine, gaining membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP). A change to General practice allowed more flexibility for family life, and I have never regretted my decision. I have always enjoyed Women’s health, and hold the Diploma of Obstetrics and Gynaecology and the Diploma of Family Planning. More recently I have really enjoyed expanding my knowledge of the perimenopause and menopause. I have gained certification with the British Menopause Society, and have also completed International Menopause Society Training and a Menopause Mentorship Programme. I am also a GP tutor and enjoy teaching first year UEA students as they embark on their medical careers. I am passionate about educating others about the menopause. While some women sail through this period of their lives many more women struggle. Debilitating symptoms can have an enormous impact on their quality of life both at home and in their careers. Menopause in the workplace is quite rightly (with 40% of women needfing time off and 10% resigning) a hot topic. Menopause awareness and culture change needs to be combined with better access to effective treatment to change these tragic statistics. Education of the public, healthcare professionals and workplace is an area of my work I take great pride in. Outside of work family life is busy, with two teenage boys and a crumbling house to renovate. I like to keep fit and active with running and tennis, and more recently have taken up climbing. Ski holidays are always a family highlight when we are able to escape.
