I had the pleasure of working with Emily at TD Bank when she was a summer intern in 2014. While it is true that my expectations from a summer intern were low, I quickly realized the gift that I was given. As you might expect, I started out by giving Emily, a summer intern, relatively simple tasks with lots of instructions and guidance. She delivered quick results. I gave her increasingly complicated tasks with even less instructions and again, she delivered quick results. As is apt to happen in the business world, we are expected to deliver ever increasing results with the same resources. Bowing to time pressures, I began to assign Emily mere objectives with little guidance other than pointing her in the right direction. To my astonishment Emily again delivered quick results. Emily’s maturity and productiveness surpassed all expectations and matched the production of full time employees with far more education and experience. She possesses intelligence and a desire to contribute to the goals and objectives of the group. While she is a self-proclaimed master at busy work, she has the insight to solve complex business problems, evidence by her work in developing key risk indicators for the TD Credit Card businesses. Emily has an exceptional working knowledge of the Microsoft suite of programs, including Excel, Outlook and Word. Our work together included designing graphs and creating pivot tables in Excel. Emily created PDF presentation material using the worksheets we created in Excel. After working with Emily for just a few short weeks, I came to the conclusion that she is the smartest person in the room. It is true that I am writing this recommendation for Emily’s benefit, but I doubt she will need my help. She has a God given ability that will take her as far as she wants to go. I am also writing this recommendation for the person lucky enough to come across Emily in their search for a new employee. I know how difficult it is to sort through the hundreds of resumes, asking the same interview questions and getting the same well-rehearsed responses, looking for the right person who can quickly add value and plough through the backlog of work that is piling up. My advice to you is this; don’t let Emily leave your building without making her an offer and pray that it is compelling enough to make her accept it. It is my hope that in a few years from now, after she has climbed the corporate ladder, and she needs to hire a new employee, that she remembers to call the old guy that sat next to her during the summer of 2014."
