Teaching laboratories are training grounds for the scientists of tomorrow. I have a decade experience of supporting them and learning about how to maximise their potential, with a particular interest in bioscience. I am currently Education Research Lead for LearnSci, working with academic partners to obtain deeper insights into how our LabSims and Smart Worksheet resources can be of maximal benefit to their students. Before that, I was a Senior Learning Technologist. Working alongside academic partners, I designed LabSims and Smart Worksheets; interactive and feedback-rich learning resources to help students prepare for labs, practice techniques in a safe environment and learn to handle the often complex data analysis required afterwards.Alongside but independent to this, I completed a Master's in Educational Research (Sept 2019-Sept 2021) with Distinction. My dissertation was a mixed-methods study into the academic staff goals and perceptions of bioscience teaching laboratories in the UK. In my taught units I have studied: - Understanding Educational Research, - Philosophy and Research Design, - Quantitative Research Methods in Social Science (Introductory and Advanced), - Qualitative Research Methods in Social Science,- Designing Technologies for Learning. In my past role (2011-2016) as Assistant Teacher in Biochemistry at the University of Bristol, I gave tutorials and assisted in lab practicals, enhancing students' learning in their education activities. I gave marks and feedback on multiple assignments, organised other demonstrators, designed and modified learning resources and administrated the eBiolabs website. I became a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) in 2016.Writing has always been a part of my life. As a freelance script writer for SciShow, I worked from scientific papers, press releases and communication with researchers from a wide range of disciplines, converting them into accessible, fixed-length scripts. Once released, the videos may be seen by upwards of a million viewers. I maintained a casual science blog at memeticdrifting.com from March 2013 til December 2015. I have also written for Love Nature, Things We Don't Know and more. Other experiences include tutoring maths and science for students aged 7-18, interning with Focus magazine and We The Curious science centre, and volunteering at Cheltenham Science Festival, the Festival of Nature and the Avon Wildlife Trust.

Freelance Script WriterScishow Sep 2015 - May 2017SciShow is a science education YouTube channel with over 4.5 million subscribers. As a freelance script writer, I worked mainly with the US-based editorial team. I gave and received pitches for upcoming videos, and crafted scripts from 400-word Quick Questions to 2000-word list or in-depth Infusion pieces. I would often consult with academics along the way to check facts, source images and help me deepen my understanding of the topic at hand. On a semi-regular basis I would also take responsibility for writing the weekly News script. This had added time pressure and also involved sifting through upcoming (embargoed) press releases and journal articles to select the most intriguing and interesting ones for our audience.During the year-and-a-half I worked with SciShow, I wrote the script for nearly 50 videos on a delightfully broad range of topics, including mushroom clouds, bats, the Zika virus, cheese, beta-blockers, dinosaurs and more! Some examples:- What does your uvula do? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ncmUToEIpEA - Why don't sleeping bats fall down? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=n6RCxTK7geI- Metal vs Bacteria https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DjZ6b20LSoc

Summer Studentship With Cellular And Molecular Medicine DepartmentUniversity Of Bristol Jul 2010 - Aug 2010Techniques I used during the seven weeks included qPCR and COBRA (Combined Bisulphite Restriction Analysis) to determine potential links between methylation and expression in three selected genes using Wilms' Tumour samples. After initial supervised for the first few days while I got accustomed to the techniques, it felt good to have autonomy in a lab environment, as opposed to the pre-determined experiments in the training labs. It reinforced in me the importance of good lab etiquette, including sterility and cleanliness when working, sharing of knowledge and resources and how future experiments depend on the results of the last.
