About Emily Eck
Skilled and enthusiastic linguist with a passion for data and communication. My love of linguistics began in elementary school the day we learned how to diagram sentences. That lesson sparked my curiosity about how language works, and that curiosity grew throughout elementary and high school and led me to pursue a degree in Cognitive Science at the University of Pennsylvania. My concentration in psychology and linguistics combined with a foundational exploration of computer science, philosophy, and neuroscience pushed me to approach linguistics from a holistic perspective and instilled in me the importance of interdisciplinary collaboration. I went on to receive an MA in English Linguistics from University College London, where I was awarded distinction for my dissertation. My other work in that program included a 6,000-word research paper applying discourse analysis techniques to study the effect of non-disclosure agreements in the telling of personal trauma narratives as well as essays on modality, syntactic gradience, and grammaticalization and semantic change. As an Engineering Linguist at LinkedIn, I apply my expertise in linguistics and data science to evaluate machine learning models that enhance the user experience.Outside of work, I serve as the Musical Director for the A Capella Project Philadelphia and have arranged for and taught music to groups of varying sizes and skill levels.
