Emily Figdor is a nonprofit leader and former elected local official with a 20-year track record of building values-aligned teams that drive systemic change. Emily is a strategic planner, organization builder, and fundraiser with strong communication skills and a commitment to centering equity in social change work. An architect of transformative social change policies at the national, state, and local levels, Emily is known for her courage and her keen ability to think outside-the-box. She was named 1 of 7 top lobbyists on global warming by “The Hill” newspaper and 1 of the most effective green advocates by “Washington Life” magazine. As chair of the Portland School Board in Maine, Emily spearheaded historic equity budgets and was the primary driver behind numerous cutting-edge equity policies to dismantle systems and structures perpetuating racism. At MoveOn, she built a $20M recurring donor base, increasing recurring contributions by 700% and enabling the organization to grow from 20 to 90 employees. Her drive to make the world a better place began with her early volunteer work as an escort at an abortion clinic in Washington, D.C. This experience lit a fire that sparked a lifelong commitment to build and lead organizations dedicated to social justice. Key Accomplishments:• Led mid-sized, urban school district with $154M annual budget, building support internally and throughout Portland, Maine, for district’s equity focus. Increased the district’s budget by nearly 50% and wrote and passed more than a dozen policies to dismantle systems and structures perpetuating racism, including ending the district’s School Resource Officer program and moving to restorative practices. • Raised hundreds of millions of dollars for MoveOn and tens of millions for both progressive candidates up and down the ballot and allied organizations.• Built a state-based advocacy organization from the ground up into one of largest activist membership organizations in Maine.• Developed concept behind 2006 Safe Climate Act, persuading environmental champions in Congress to introduce first bill limiting warming to no more than 2 ℃ from pre-industrial levels.
