As a designer, I made graphics that highlighted key elements of the science articles in the BSR Magazine, which is a graduate-student run science publication that is disseminated online, as well as across UC Berkeley and the surrounding community As the Art Director, I led the team of 8-12 graduate students in designing informative graphics and illustrations; designed the overall magazine layout, reviewed the final magazine before printing the copies for distribution; and coordinated with the executive committee and printing and advertising agencies to solicit article authors, designers, editors, and advertisements

As the Sanitation sub-committee lead, I developed and carried out a sanitation alternatives analysis with the aim of reducing human exposure to feces in three remote Fijian villages. This sanitation analysis complemented the years of water infrastructure projects (largely the construction of source water tanks and pipelines) built by this EWB project group and the communities of Buca Bay. As the team Community Liaison, I helped maintain communication with Buca Bay community members in the months after the project implementation to assess the success of the most recent water pipeline construction and facilitate ongoing maintenance.

As a Resident Academic Mentor at the Bowles Hall Residential College, I counseled undergraduate students in academic and career decisions and served as a bridge between undergraduate residents and campus resources.To those ends, I developed and hosted workshops focused on career preparedness (e.g. “How to Choose Your Major,” “Applying for Summer Internships/Research Experiences,” etc.) and held weekly office hours and check-ins to offer support regarding classes, graduation plans, and direct students toward on-campus resources.

Assisted in designing and monitoring 1-liter lab-scale upflow anaerobic sludge blanket reactors for evaluating the effectiveness of anammox bacterial systems in removing excess ammonium in high strength wastewaters Evaluated the dominance of anammox bacteria in reactor biomass via a fluorescence in-situ hybridization (FISH) microscopy techniqueAwarded the NSF Graduate Research Fellowship

Characterized the stability of anammox with zeolite minerals to improve biomass retention in anammox processes. Used spectrophotometric techniques to measure substrates and metabolites of anammox bacteria growth. Measured and analyzed anaerobic headspace composition via gas chromatography. Quantified and characterized anammox cells and communities using flow cytometry and qPCR.

Characterized the relationship between caddisfly larvae and river water quality via multivariate statistical analyses (e.g. canonical correspondence analysis). Used standard limnological procedures to measure water parameters (e.g. DO, chlorophyll, etc). Extracted mitochondrial DNA from caddisfly larvae using standard chemical extraction methods.
