My name is Emily Hellstern and I received my master’s from Virginia Tech in 2022 with a degree in Biomedical and Veterinary Sciences.During my time as a masters student I was a gradate research assistant for Dr. Jamie Stewart and earned the masters student of the year award in my program. My research focused on a protein known as nerve growth factor (NGF) and its effect on embryo development when supplemented into media during multiple in- vitro embryo production time points. I specifically assessed its effects on cleavage and blastocyst rates. In order to do this, I supplemented media during either maturation or fertilization with a human recombinant beta nerve growth factor or a bovine beta nerve growth factor. I graduated from the University of Florida in 2020 with my bachelor’s in animal science, where I began my journey into the world of reproduction. I started off as an employee in the lab of distinguished and L.E. “Red” Larson professor Peter J. Hansen, Ph. D. I started volunteering as a research assistant in August 2018. Dr. Hansen then hired me as an employee in his lab in August 2019. While at the lab, I was able to work with multiple PhD. and Mater’s students on their research with embryo development and survival, influencing me to take a similar route.
