Emily is a specialist in upland ecology with expertise in dwarf shrub and fungi communities, based in the Scottish Highlands.Emily graduated from the University of Edinburgh in 2009 with a 1st honours degree in Ecology, then completed a NERC funded PhD studentship at the James Hutton Institute and the University of Aberdeen in 2013. She then worked as the lead Habitat Ecologist for the consultancy Nevis Environmental for 3.5 years, working on a variety of large scale renewables projects. She is now returning to research, preparing her doctoral thesis for wider publication as a series of academic papers.Emily's doctoral project investigated symbiotic fungi in alpine habitats in Scotland, within the context of current upland management and environmental change. The project unveiled an astounding diversity of fungi species, including 23 species new to science and 34 species previously unrecorded in Scotland.
