About Emily Long

I am completing my PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. My research focuses on how we infer others' mental states, such as beliefs and intentions. I study the way in which these inferences are affected by how we perceive the target person's traits, such as their personality or cognitive ability. Using experimental behavioural methods and statistical modelling, my work seeks to develop a comprehensive cognitive model of mental state inference. With this foundation, I am interested in understanding how mental state inference might differ in certain clinical conditions (such as autism, depression, or schizophrenia). I have significant project management experience through my work as President and Trustee of a national educational charity, the European Youth Parliament, with 39 partner organisations across Europe. This work allowed me to learn how to encourage young people to gain the knowledge and skills needed to generate pragmatic solutions to complex problems.

Developing and empirically testing a cognitive model of mental state inference (Theory of Mind). To do so, I have developed the first Theory of Mind paradigm to assess accuracy against real mental states. I have also developed a novel approach to the analysis of random effects in mixed effects models.
