About Emily Long
I am completing my PhD in Experimental Psychology at the University of Oxford. My research focuses on how we infer others' mental states, such as beliefs and intentions. I study the way in which these inferences are affected by how we perceive the target person's traits, such as their personality or cognitive ability. Using experimental behavioural methods and statistical modelling, my work seeks to develop a comprehensive cognitive model of mental state inference. With this foundation, I am interested in understanding how mental state inference might differ in certain clinical conditions (such as autism, depression, or schizophrenia). I have significant project management experience through my work as President and Trustee of a national educational charity, the European Youth Parliament, with 39 partner organisations across Europe. This work allowed me to learn how to encourage young people to gain the knowledge and skills needed to generate pragmatic solutions to complex problems.

Dphil Research Student
CurrentDeveloping and empirically testing a cognitive model of mental state inference (Theory of Mind). To do so, I have developed the first Theory of Mind paradigm to assess accuracy against real mental states. I have also developed a novel approach to the analysis of random effects in mixed effects models.
Graduate Student Researcher
Conducted Master's thesis research using a novel paradigm for testing metacognition in the domain of trait inference.
Guest Lecturer
CurrentDesigned and delivered yearly practical workshops on experimental design and programming experiments for ~ 40 MSc Developmental Psychology and Psychopathology students.
Undergraduate Researcher
Conducted Bachelor's thesis work developing a new experimental paradigm to test the accuracy of mental state inference - the first to make use of real mental states. I was responsible for all aspects of the project: conceptualisation, methodological design, testing, statistical analysis, visualisation and writing. I have presented this work at the prestigious Experimental Psychology Society meeting, and it has been accepted for journal publication following peer-review.
Undergraduate Research Assistant
I supported research on a project examining how emotional faces are processed in autism and alexithymia. I was responsible for collating questionnaires, testing participants, pre-processing eye-tracking data, and linear mixed modelling of behavioural and physiological data. This involved working with R, Gorilla, and OpenFace.
Research Intern
I was responsible for quantitative research using existing data on vote share and socioeconomic indicators to model the drivers of the populist vote in 6 regions within Europe. I completed extensive statistical and graphical work in SPSS, as well as devising a questionnaire and carrying out a literature review.
