Provides technical and operational leadership for the Nebraska Public Health Laboratory (NPHL) and the Nebraska Public Service Laboratory (NPSL) with initiative and independent judgement. Serves as a member of leadership team to plan and implement laboratory policies, procedures, and services of NPHL/NPSL's Biological and Chemistry Sections, working with laboratory directors and technical supervisors to ensure efficient and effective departmental operations, appropriate staffing and training, quality control and compliance adherence. Manages the laboratory resources and staff; oversees biosafety level 3 (BLS-3) laboratory activities as pertaining to the Laboratory Response Network; serves as the main contact for internal units; coordinates the laboratory accreditation and personnel competency programs; and develops new test protocols and manages clinical specimen testing and research projects.

-Utilize conventional microbiology techniques and molecular assays in a CLIA/CAP accredited laboratory for identification, speciation, subtyping and/or genotyping of a variety of human pathogens associated with foodborne illness. -Conduct state-wide surveillance testing of both human and vector-borne viruses. -Partner with state epidemiologists during routine and outbreak situations to ensure prompt and thorough detection and characterization of etiological agent(s).-Design and validate molecular based assays, as requested, to meet both clinical and research needs. -Work with biological select agent risk level three organisms in a biosafety level three laboratory ensuring safe laboratory practices when manipulating high consequence pathogens.-Provide point of care testing for the Nebraska Biocontainment Unit. -Collaborate with local, state and national entities such as the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Resources and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on a variety of tasks including assay development, data transfer, informative lectures and outbreak guidance -Assist in rule out and refer laboratory training workshops for bioterrorism organisms. -Perform grant writing duties ensure adequate funding and appropriate aims.-Project lead for CaliciNet and CryptoNet.
