I use a genetic approach to investigate cell envelope biogenisis of Gram-negative bacteria. Specifically, I focus on understanding how lipopolysaccharide (LPS) is moved from the cytoplasm to the outer membrane by the lipopolysaccharide transport (Lpt) machinery.PI: Natacha Ruiz

• Working in the lab of Dr. Louis Tisa I studied the plant-microbe symbiosis between actinobacteria and actinorhizal plants that can be used for bioremediation of soil.
• Performed coinfection studies with novel strains of actinobacteria and demonstrated their ability to promote root nodule formation and increase plant growth of the actinorhizal plant Casuarina glauca
• Wrote a grant proposal and received the UNH Summer Undergraduate Research Fellowship
• Presented my work at The University of New Hampshire’s Undergraduate Research Conference and at the Boston Bacterial Meeting held at Harvard University

• This upper level microbiology course used both genomic and classical clinical identification approaches to investigate the microbiome. Students generated and analyzed primary data on their skin microbome.
