Mustard Tree charity opens its doors to those at risk of homelessness and facing poverty through a scheme titled The Freedom Project. This project offers an array of classes and workshops, allowing individuals to gain the necessary skills for employment, as well as offering tools to help with barriers faced in day to day life. At present I am a registered volunteer, known as a ‘friend of’ the mustard tree and am dedicating a minimum of one day a week to the organization. At present I am helping to deliver the English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) classes which are predominantly attended by asylum seekers hoping to gain a better quality of life in our country. The feedback gained regarding my capabilities of teaching and leading group activities has sparked a desire to teach English abroad. This is something I am working towards in the coming years. Further, due to my six plus years’ experience of working in hospitality I lead role-play sessions within the Customer Confidence classes to demonstrate the realities and expected standards of staff when working in customer service to the attendees.

As part of a research team I was responsible for conducting a literature review exploring the factors contributing to high alcohol consumption in Rwanda. This research programme had been funded by UNITAR as part of their partnership with the Rwandan government to minimise non-communicable diseases contributed to by alcohol misuse. Throughout this post, I utilised outstanding organisational skills to prioritise necessary research components and to work in adherence to external frameworks. This involved continuous liaison with numerous global partners of UNITAR to update significant parties on the progression of the research. At the end of the literature review, myself and my research partner applied the theoretical knowledge gained through the review to create policy recommendations to improve alcohol use in the country.
