Profile bio

About Emily Nuthall

I love working with people and animals. Especially when my work benefits animal advocacy, and conservation, or the arts. As a Visitor Engagement Specialist at the Museum of Photographic Arts, as well as an Educator for SeaWorld and the San Diego Zoo, I have had the honor of working directly with the public, educating them on everything from Edward Weston to endangered species, perspective to penguins, and composition to climate science! As a volunteer caregiver for Nurtured by Nature, an animal awareness non-profit famous for its otter experience, I have trained in the care and maintenance of a variety of animals. It has given me the amazing opportunity to get close and personal with the type of wildlife I otherwise would never have access to.My second passion in life is acting and theatre, and so it’s no surprise that I have fallen into roles where I get to engage with the public. As I gain experience and determine the direction and purpose of my young career, I am simultaneously building valuable skillsets in public speaking, advocacy, animal welfare, student outreach and education, and customer relations. Where ever I choose to go, I know that it will involve helping animals and educating/entertaining people.

Listed skills include Public Speaking, Performing Arts, Teamwork, Teaching, and 12 others.

Visitor Engagement Specialist

San Diego, California, United States

As a Visitor Engagement Specialist, I got to interact with guests all throughout the museum. At the front desk, I had the honor of welcoming anyone who walks in through our front door. Whether they were looking to explore the museum or if they were looking for a friendly face with answers about Balboa Park and its' amazing museums, gardens, and events, I was ready to help! It was my great pleasure to ensure that each guest that entered the museum felt welcome. In the galleries I got to challenge guests to spend more time with the photographs. Through the use of Visual Thinking Strategies (VTS) I had the chance to engage with guests, sparking conversations about the artist's intent, the photo process, and our own interpretations of the pieces. One of my favorite things about working with the Museum of Photographic arts was my ongoing opportunity to learn. A new exhibition meant new artists to learn about, and new discussions to be had!

Educator/Guide - Animal Educational Tours, Talks, Experiences, Outreach Classroom Programs

Educator/Guide (2016 – Present)Program Aide (2015 – 2016)I was an educational tour guide for the San Diego Zoo, and my job was to educate the public about animal ecology, conservation, and advocacy. At the zoo, we were a leading force in conservation efforts. We believe that every single person has the ability to be wildlife heroes and I love inspiring that kind of passion. It was my job to be able to answer questions about any exhibit or animal at the zoo. I covered pandas, large cats, penguins, elephants, polar bears, reptiles, monkeys, and koalas. Maybe you saw me driving those huge double-decker buses?I also had the honor of working directly with our Animal Ambassadors (ambassadors that are animals), and at times I would accompany them to San Diego schools to meet the local children. Together, we would educate students about our local watersheds, climate science, pollinators, and endangered species.
