Her project involved the study of the impact of short-wave troughs (upper-level atmospheric disturbances) on lake-effect snow events. This research was supported by the National Science Foundation and has real-world impacts because forecasting the precise location and intensity of these lake-effect snow bands can be difficult. These troughs can impact these band characteristics. Emily did great work during the eight-week research internship. She was quick to learn the background literature dealing with lake-effect snow and was efficient at carrying out an 8-year climatology of these trough-band interactions off of Lake Ontario. For all of my projects, I pair up students into groups of two. Emily got along extremely well with her partner Zach, and the two were able to split tasks and work together in a very efficient fashion. In fact, they accomplished all of the work I had planned for them in the first six weeks and they had the opportunity to do even more research. I believe that the work Emily completed is very publishable in a refereed journal and just needs to be written up in a formal manner. I was pleased to support Emily to present at both a local and national meteorology conference.
