I am Professor of International Economic Law and Sustainable Development based at Southampton Law School, University of Southampton. Alongside my research and teaching I have fulfilled many academic leadership and management roles during my career, including that of Associate Dean, Education and Student Experience, Faculty of Business, Law and Art from 2015-18, and Head of Southampton Law School (Interim) October 2020-January 2021.My primary research interest lies in International Economic Law and Sustainable Development and my publications, in EU and international economic law, have a consistent focus upon the interfaces between trade/environment/climate change; trade, labour and human rights, and trade, environment and human rights (trade and sustainability). Reflecting my research interests, in the last 20+ years, I have developed and delivered modules predominantly EU Law, Public Law, WTO Law, and Globalisation and Law at the Universities of Sussex and Southampton. In September 2022, I was appointed Chair of the UK Trade and Sustainable Development, Domestic Advisory Group, of which I am a member representing the Trade and Public Policy (TaPP) Network. The TSD Domestic Advisory Group is an independent advisory group appointed to support the implementation of the sustainable development, labour and environmental chapters of the UK's agreements with non-EU states. In recent years I have given expert (oral) evidence to the House of Lords, European Union Select Committee, Internal Market Sub-Committee and to the House of Commons International Trade Select Committee (oral and written). I have also undertaken consultancy work relating to trade and labour standards, business and human rights and modern slavery, and trade and environment. I am Director of the Southampton Law School Centre for International Law and Globalisation, and a member of the Institute of Maritime Law, and of the Southampton Marine and Maritime Institute. Externally I am a member of the Trade and Public Policy Network and a founding member of the South and South West Trade and Sustainable Development Network.
