Profile bio

About Emily Starrett

I am currently the Math Program Manager at Hamlin Robinson, a school that serves students with Dyslexia and other language learning differences, as well as Associate Faculty at City University of Seattle in the School of Education and Leadership.I recently earned my Ph.D from the Learning, Literacies, and Technologies program at Arizona State University, with an emphasis in STEM Education. I served as a Research Assistant and worked on many interdisciplinary and collaborative teams to support teachers' pedagogical practice and enhance student learning opportunities. I taught courses in the Mary Lou Fulton Teachers College, one of which (Elementary Math Methods), I designed the syllabus for. I also received my MEd in Learning Design and Technology (Ed Tech) from ASU. My personal research focuses on supporting math and science teachers embrace uncertainty both personally and pedagogically, centering the use of student uncertainty as a teaching tool to boost resiliency, creative problem-solving, and sense-making skills. I have designed and facilitated professional development experiences for teachers, based on research and best practices, that aim to enhance both content knowledge and pedagogical content knowledge in order to design student-centered, inquiry-focused, and inclusive instruction. I also have experience developing and implementing online instructional modules for adults (e.g., an informational module for a new data analytics system administered to teachers and administrators at a large public school district) and students (e.g., an informational module on effective study strategy skills administered to undergraduate biology students). Prior to beginning my doctoral journey, I taught for 10 years in both Arizona and Washington states. I started off teaching special education (grades 5 through 12), where I also supported students transition from middle to high school. I gradually became the math specialist, teaching a math essentials class for students with disabilities. Eventually, I obtained my secondary mathematics certification and transitioned to teach math full time. Outside of academia, I have been a dance instructor since 2009 teaching classes and workshops in Hip Hop, Street Jazz, Burlesque, Broadway, and Zumba. I choreographed musical theater productions for theaters around Arizona, where my choreography has been nominated and won several awards. I have also choreographed various commercials including the Arizona State Fair Flash Mob and an advertisement for Lunar Bingo at Fort McDowell Casino.

Listed skills include Dance, Teaching, Musical Theatre, Dance Instruction, and 10 others.
