Emily Westergaard is the CEO of the By Degrees Foundation (formerly called the Des Moines I Havea Dream Foundation), which works to ensure more kids graduate from high school and pursue education after high school. As the chief professional officer of the organization, Emily has led the development of an innovative new model for program delivery expanding the organizations support for entire schools. As the Executive Director of the "I Have a Dream" Foundation, I am working to expand opportunities for children and families in Des Moines by creating a network of partnerships to provide wrap-around academic and nonacademic services for kids in kindergarten to and through college. I am responsible for fundraising, strategic development of programs, and community engagement.
As Major Gift Officer, I worked with Drake University administrators to identify funding priorities and seek support from alumni across the country. I raised money to support the creation of new laboratory spaces, experiential learning opportunities, endowed professorships and scholarships.
I oversaw fundraising efforts, including private, corporate and foundation solicitations and management of federal grants. I helped with preparation of three-day international symposium, international Laureate Award Ceremony, and month-long Harvest Festival and collaborated with partner organizations to cross-promote and develop regional programs. I was also project manager for the restoration of the former Des Moines Public Library Building.

As a Grinnell Corps Fellow at the Desert Research Foundation of Namibia, I was stationed at Gobabeb, where I coordinated research projects with international scientific teams, and assisted visiting researchers with data collection, laboratory set up and testing and data management. I also wrote and edited technical and popular articles for scientific journals and magazines, taught courses in GIS and scientific inquiry to Namibian high school and college students, and assisted in the operation of an international research station.
