I’m a Professor of Biology at Pitzer and Scripps Colleges, and the Director of Program Development at Claremont McKenna College. My research in chromatin and epigenetics addresses the roles of histone modifications, modifying enzymes, and modification binding proteins in chromatin dynamics that control gene expression. Undergraduate students in my program co-author publications and present at national research conferences. My team’s work has been supported by National Science Foundation grants including a NSF CAREER Award, which supported building of the Ciliate Genomics Consortium – a national consortium of ~forty colleges and universities that involve hundreds of students each year in collaborative functional genomics research. I continue to lead the consortium with a focus on promoting integration of authentic (faculty) research into classroom teaching. Most recently I carried out a related project as a Fulbright Scholar in Croatia (AY23-24). With commitment to promoting interdisciplinary problem-centered learning, I accept consulting jobs to help build collaborative, research-focused, and inclusive science education programs.
