About Emily Wood

I am currently a Science Teacher, working at Hitchin Girls’ School. I recently finished the Teach First Programme, a charity with the vision that no child’s educational success is limited by their socio-economic background. Alongside gaining my QTS, I have also achieved a Distinction grade in my PDGE studies from Sheffield Hallam University. I was previously a Single Point of Entry Officer & Network Co-ordinator at Mind in the City, Hackney & Waltham Forest. This role involved working with clients who have mental health difficulties and managing their journey within the City & Hackney Wellbeing Network, with a focus on recovery and goal-setting. I enjoy volunteering as a Listener at Samaritans. As an advocate for student wellbeing and mental health, I held the role of Welfare & Campaigns in Furness College and as a Student Transitions Assistant, engaging students with wellbeing events and offering support when needed.I graduated from Lancaster University with a First-Class degree in Biological Sciences. Heavy module focus on tropical disease, environmental pathogens, evolution, ecology and conservation biology.

My ability to work as a reflective practitioner has been improved this year, using critical classroom events, that have informed my approaches to a wide range of classroom situations.Research-informed practice is evidenced in all my lessons, utilising concise explanations and vigorous modelling techniques, to gradually increase student participation, while removing teacher scaffolds. This promotes independence and pupil mastery.During the Spring Term, I have held a strong focus towards developing my formative assessment techniques, ensuring a high participation ratio that accurately inform adaptive classroom practice. This role demands resilience, quick decision-making and strong organisation.
