    The Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation (NEES) is a network of laboratories across the U.S. created by the NSF with advanced experimental tools to accelerate understanding of seismic activity on today's infrastructure. As a NEES intern at the UCSB lab, I studied experimental data from a fully instrumented test structure to improve understanding of soil-structure interaction (SSI). A full-scale test structure continuously recorded the response of the structure to ambient earthquakes as well as regular forced vibration tests via a mobile shaker. I characterized the effects of SSI using parametric and non-parametric system identification procedures and investigated changes in structural behavior with changes in the environment, such as seasonal fluctuations in temperature and ground water level. Findings have been presented at several conferences, including the Southern California Earthquake Center 2012 Annual Meeting, the American Geophysical Union 2012 Fall Meeting, the Seismological Society of America 2013 Annual Meeting, and the Network for Earthquake Engineering Simulation Annual Meeting 2013. My work won “Best Overall Research” Winner at the Young Researcher’s Symposium at Stanford University in 2012.

    For an independent research project, I investigated the topic of "Sustainable Concrete from Optimized Aggregate Mixtures." Research suggests that mixing particular size distributions of coarse and fine aggregates can significantly reduce the amount of cement by allowing the aggregate to fill a greater volume fraction of the concrete. Reducing the amount of cement in concrete has significant implications since production of cement is very expensive, energy intensive, and generates over 7% of the world’s anthropogenic carbon dioxide emissions. Using their newly developed Torquato-Jiao (TJ) linear-programming algorithm to study a broader range of granular structures packed from random initial conditions, Princeton University researchers Adam B. Hopkins et al. believe they have demonstrated the presence of previously unknown binary structures at specific small-to-large sphere size ratios and relative small sphere concentrations. Although binary aggregate is not practical, the mathematical approach would permit optimization of broader size distributions that could allow for a sizable reduction of cement in concrete if validated. I worked to investigate this new theory experimentally.
