About Emily Chaffins

Hi, my name is Emily Chaffins. I'm a fiction writer who has won multiple awards, including First Place for Undergraduate Fiction in the Florida International University Student Literary Awards (2023), a Silver Key Award in the Scholastic Art & Writing Awards (Humor Category, 2021), and a Grand Prize in the La Plume Young Writer’s Contest (2021). My poem, "Ars Poetica With Food Coloring," is forthcoming in Winter Vol. 27 Ed. 1 of Stirring this January 2025. My short story “Raspberry Cordial” will be released in issue 29.1 of The Windhover August 2025. With an American and Cuban background, I was a Hispanic Scholarship Fund Scholar (2021-2022, 2022-2023). I'm a member of the Honors Society of Phi Kappa Phi (Florida International University Chapter). I'm the creator and curator of the Archdiocese of Miami's "Through the Catholic Lens" blog, which is all about rediscovering art and media through a Catholic worldview.As a frequently published freelance journalist and blogger, my work has been featured in "National Catholic Register;" "Catholic Exchange;" the Archdiocese of Miami's "Florida Catholic" newspaper and "Let's Talk" blog; Our Sunday Visitor (OSV) News; "Catholic Review"; "The Catholic World Report"; "EWTN Great Britain"; and "The Florida Book Review." My work has appeared in Catholic Vote's popular newsletter, "The Loop." I was honored to receive First Place in "Best reporting on Catholic education" (Spanish-language section) from the 2024 Catholic Media Awards.I earned an Associates of Arts degree at Miami Dade College; a Bachelor of Arts in English - Creative Writing at Florida International University; a Certificate in Professional and Public Writing at FIU; and I am pursuing a Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing at FIU.
